You are a fool. This team can win WC if they are properly paid and encouraged.

They won 2 tournaments last year and were runners up in two. They beat Holland, Germany, Australia last year. Also, India is Asia cup champion in hockey since 2003. A horrible mess created by the Sr Gill and then Jr Gill resulted in India not qualifying in Olympics.

Its time to support the team so that they bring the glory back.

Hats off to Mayawati
by S Shrikanth on Jan 14, 2010 01:49 PM  | Hide replies

She has done it again. She is the one who knows how to take lead and set examples.

Mayawati knew that Rs 1 Crore announced by Sahara will be peanuts (5 lacs each)for the 20 diamonds of Indian Hockey team. She made it 5 Crore so that each of the son of the soil gets 25 lacs each, i.e. their minimum value.Further she has announced to sponsor the team for next 2 years. This is simply Great, and an egg over face of the shameless Hockey India and Sports Minister.

CMs of MP and Punjab have already come out for financial support to hokey players. Hope other CMs to follow them and hokey gets its due after a long time in India.

But where is our economist PM and his mistress hiding???? Where is their support to the National Game????

It should be for cricket, not hockey. Hockey sponsorship would not be more than 3 crore. :-)

Man when this was a National Game thre was respect to game and not to Money. Now yes money is needed but the Sardar Politics has screwed up. from where Maya got 5 crores whose money is this, will any one pay to Kabadi team and foot ball team later, how many players in the team knows to answer 10 questions about india and indian leaders or ex- hockey players. finally maya wants the players to become her goondas in the later period after retirement from hockey....

This team has the capability of winning the WC, if properly motivated and Hockey India does not discourages them. Do you know that more than 60 countries compete for 12 places in World cup hockey?

You will be surprised to know that Indian Hockey team won 2 tournaments and were runners up in 2 more.

Awesome Support
by Praveen Goud on Jan 14, 2010 01:45 PM

Good, politicians too started taking responsibility instead of owning them only when they succeed with medals. MNC's should also take some responsibilty. Except Sahara , no other indian company seems to support the sports. MNC's should look beyond cricket for sponsorships. Awesome support by Mayawati to end the deadlock and necessary revamp of sports authority should be done which lead to this situation to prevent happening in future.

In a country where bureaucrats and politicians cough up telephone bills of 50 lakhs and 1 cr its a pity that nobody could come forward to finance an entire sport.Hats off to mayawati for this. Its such a shame that a measly amount of a few crs was not available to fund the entire team.Very soon as the sport picks up they'll all be fighting for sponsorship.

Is the fund available!
by sashi kumar on Jan 14, 2010 01:43 PM

I thought she was more focused on her statues...anyways its good to see her national interest let me put a question what about her state???? Where she is going to take this fund from does she have hockey team sponsor as agenda in her election. Rediculous... Madam you have more than enough issues to handle at your state please handle that first.

Hockey
by Jai Tejwani on Jan 14, 2010 01:42 PM

I appreciate the effort of UP CM. Let this be an eye opener for the authorities to realize that Indians loves Hockey. The game has reached its current status only because of its governors who never took the sport seriously. India with its huge manpower resources never had the shortage of players.
UP CM's efforts needs applause for its timing, love for the sport and sincerity.
