Politicians runing sports
by vik sam on Jan 04, 2010 11:39 AM

G B Shaw said "politics is a third class game played by fourth class people". As soon as these fourth class people enter the arena of other sports- be it hockey, cricket, or tennins, they start to go downhill. Can we enact a law so that politicans are not allowed to play or manage any other game than the "game of politics"?

Correct decision
by Shankar Nag on Jan 03, 2010 10:01 PM  | Hide replies

I don't know how Prakash being an US Citizen could play for India. Vijay is also a naturalized US Citizen. Though I don't deny his achievements and contributions, it is not fair in Vijay's part to deceive his adapted country. People should work for the countries where they hold citizenship.

Prakash is an NRI . Even Shika oberai is also an NRI . NRIs can play for India . Thats norm now . Few months back Govt came with the propsal that NRIs can no longer play for India , but backtracked .

Prakash and Shika are not NRIs. They are American citizens of Indian origin. NRI is a person, who has held Indian citizenship or is HOLDING Indian citizenship, and who at the same time is living abroad.

Prakash's father is of Indian heritage, his mom is of Sri Lankan heritage. But he was born in USA, and has never has held Indian citizenship. So he is not a NRI. Skikha too is not a NRI.
But have a special place in the hearts of Indian fans, as they have Indian heritage.

Wild Card EVERY year?
by free market on Jan 03, 2010 09:33 PM

"And how did Prakash react to the whole issue, having received the wild card every year since 2002."

I have to support those who denied the wild card? How many years do you keep giving a wild card? At some point, you have to make it through merit. Initially, it is okay because the guy may have potential, but wild card EVERY year for eight years?

In our country politicians like to lay their hands wherever and whenever they like to bring the downfall. Chennai open is no exception to it.

In India, every body want to put their kids in these area due to their influence.
For example:
Amitabh put Abhishek, Rakesh put Hrithik, Sunil put Rohan, DeveGowda put Kumaraswamy, Srikkanth put Aniruddha etc.,
What about people with out influence / God father who have got extra ordinary talent?

With all due respect I do not agree that Gavaskar and Srikkanth's children have had any benefit because of their fathers. If anything it may have hurt their careers due to expectations. Rohan in fact plays for Bengal rather than Mumbai.

Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Ivan Lendl are from Chennai only.
They are tamil people only. They went to foreign countries due to water problem and heat in Chennai.
Mind it.

i guess u work for amritraj..dude its a syndrome which exists all over the world and its called tall poppy syndrome n not just india..and also amritraj was almost a star and never a star.newcomb was 100 times more successful than amritraj..
wildcard is given on merits n not because u r amritraj son. ur comment that amritraj was out indian system led to his success is a cheap shot.if that was then paes n bhupati would never had been successful and also if aritraj didnt appreciate indian system then he should not accept any favours in return.. he should go n live where the system is better.. he himself has used the system to get wildcard for his very average son(in terms of tennis)
if india specialises in bringing down her heros(which amritraj was hardly) u specialises in bringing down india.. and yes Mera Bharat Mahaan

Vijay Amritraj is an hounarable person and a great tennis player (the best India produced).
As for his son getting/not getting a wild card who cares? Normally you expect most of the wild card to go to the locals.

I thought Ramesh Krishnan was best. His semi or qaurter-final match against Mats Wilander in the Australian Open is one of my most favourite matches.
