Hi, Our budget for Sports this year is 3565 crores, out of which Rs 2069 crores is allocated for Commonwealth Games. So only Rs. 1496 crores is allocated for normal sports activities.
Our Defense budget is Rs.147,344 crores this year. As you can see, our sports budget is almost 1% of our defense budget. I have no idea why those figures are cooked-up and what they benefit by it.

The defense budget is higher to prevent chinese and pakistanis from putting their fingers in your A**

My post is regarding the amount mentioned in the articles. It says our defense budget is $29 bn and sports budget $11 bn.
Re: Re: Re: At least know your facts
by Ting Tong on Dec 14, 2010 07:49 PM
If our sports budget was $11bn, we would be giving the Americans and the Chinese a run for their money. (Even after Kalmadi and co have taken their loot!!)
$11bn is a seriously cooked up figure. Poor journalism.

I would rather say Congress party instead of Kalmadi & Co. By mentioning Kalmadi, you get your bad guy where as all the other Great congress leaders manage to pose as honest ones. Kalmadi is just a broker.
They are doing a really a Good Job for India in Sports and If you can Help them, do it else just ignore, don't insult or degrade that they are asking Money.
With out OGQ, Mittal Foundation and Tata Effort India won't win even half of the Medal they win in GCW or Asian Games.

THAN GO & BEG MITTAL & TATA. DO NOT BEG PEOPLE TO GIVE YOU MONEY. MITTAL & TATA HAS MONEY TO LOOSE IF THESE ROBBERS VANISH WITH PUBLIC MONEY.

All the best can be said by everybady and it is very easy and costs nothing. You have to donate.
This effort seems to be private in nature. They can certainly talk to the corporates to make some budget/sponsorship for them because they would need the money on continuous basis. For common people, sounds like a noble cause, a section of reasonably well-off sports lovers wouldn't mind paying a small amount atleast once in a while if not regularly.
Re: Incorrect $11 billion sports budget...
by manish singh on Dec 14, 2010 03:11 PM
EXACTLY...it cant be 11 billion..if by chance its the correct figure, then its good enoug money for sport ministry to develope any sport in India
Yes dont contribute even 1paisa. This country has abundant stock of blackmoney parked in abroad.which can take care of entire population including various sports/wildlife/poverty/development etc. Instead of 100Rs , let 100 people/media everyday bring some pressure on govt to get back the money n see the difference, forget sports, nation will turn into a heaven. I hope Mr Rediff is listening.

its easy to talk big here.. will u be 1 of those 100 people. i was the part of a mission and then leave it bcoz i found people only talk big on net.. no one ready to come on street...
Re: Think smart.
by giveanid on Dec 14, 2010 11:55 AM
Right. We will come back to comment when they fail/win and tell govt what should be done. Won't spend a paisa ourselves.
The GOI's sports budget as per Rediff, is $ 11 Billion, which is approx., Rs. 49,500 Cr. May I humbly ask this government or any of its supporters / washers, who may accuse me of eating, belching & passing comments, as to where this small amount of money is going?
I'm willing to contribute, not Rs. 100, but Rs. 100,000.00 for sports persons from India, I have the money, trust me. My only condition is the Sports minstry be dissolved and the administrators therein be terminated from employment, forthwith.
Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????

You pay 2.4lacs/annum as taxes. In return you get the services of almost every govt institution in this country. Your child can get free education if you choose to avail that option. You get subsidized petrol/diesel/LPG. You don't spend a dime to repair the road in front of your house, you get electricity at a cost to the govt....don't get me started! And you complain that you pay 2.4lacs (after availing every chance to save every dime of it) and want to know how it is all spent.
I don't know about the exact figure on govt's sports spending. What I can say is, how much do you think a single student of a sports academy needs an year? And how about the stadia, staff, infrastructure etc? How about the govt jobs for sports people?
Oh, btw, BCCI is a private organization, not a revenue generator for govt.
Re: Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????
by kuldeep on Dec 14, 2010 01:54 PM
every one know that the BCCI is a private organization and not a revenue generator directly but i am sure you dont know how much taxes BCCI have paid last year, it is more than the Ambani whole group have paid, so u think that is not a revenue generation ?

How many stadia have been built in India in the past five years?
The money would be going in salaries, mostly, check it out.
Re: Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????

BCCI
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), headquartered at Mumbai, is the national governing body for all cricket in India. It's not the apex governing body in India. The board was formed in December 1928 as BCCI replaced Calcutta Cricket Club. BCCI is a society, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act. It often uses government-owned stadiums across the country at a nominal annual rent. It is a "private club consortium". Basically to become a member of a state-level association, one needs to be introduced by another member and also pay an annual fee. The state-level clubs select their representatives (secretaries) who in turn select the BCCI officials. BCCI are not required to make their balance sheets public. In the past, tax exemptions were granted to BCCI on the grounds as promoting cricket was a charitable activity but for the last three years the IPL has questioned this. [1]

1) Free education - which the government is SUPPOSED to provide for those who cannot afford it. DO you even know the standard of municipal schools? Ever wondered why the children of our maid servants DON't compete with our children?
WHY? WHY are poor people not equal to us?? Because our government stinks.
2) Subsidized petrol/diesel/lpg????? How many times are you and your ilk going to lie? What subsidy on Petrol / Diesel? The parasites / free loaders / GOI, is taking 40% of the cost of Diesel / Petrol as TAXES, LIar Liar Pants on Fire.
Who uses LPG? The middle & upper classes. Go the villages of India, I travel there regulalry, and see how many have LPG? Why does the GOI subsidize this luxury?
Who uses DIesel? The SUV owner? Why does teh GOI subsidize it, as you falsely claim?
Repair the road in front my house?? Why the HELL should I pay it? Why do I pay Road Tax when I register my vehicle? For whose DOWRY, you free loader? Why do I pay OCtroi in Maharashtra, for whose baraat?
Why do I pay TOLL on the highways?
BTW, FHUKATCHAND, I did NOT complain I pay taxes, I stated a fact. I will damm well ask WHERE it is all Spent? That is my right and don't you dare make me feel ashamed to demand that right. It is those who eat free who should be ashamed, and I DON'T mean the poor of this country, I mean politicians, bureacrats & most though NOT all government servants.
Re: Re: Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????

I can write a long reply. But somehow I feel that it will all be in vain. Why? Sample these excerpts :
1. WHY are poor people not equal to us?? Because our government stinks. {But we won't pay a dime} 2. Why do I pay Road Tax? {I want to know which all holes were filled in the next 50 years with my few thousand Rs } 3. I will damm well ask WHERE it is all Spent? {I will ask all day long, but won't step out and see all the FREE things I get for my paltry sum!} 4. I mean politicians, bureacrats {Politicians...I will shout from rooftops, but won't move my little finger to clean it up or get involved.}
Disgusting, to say the least! A TAX PAYER! Some people should really be exempted from paying taxes! Here is one.

As a species, the days of corrupt, flatulent politicians, and their washers' like yourself & priybrata, are seriously numbered. Bihar has shown the way. Gujarat is already well governed for a while. In places like Karnataka & Maharashtra, where mis management reign supreme, but there are no better alternatives, people & the much maligned media will force the politicians to become accountable.
No political party, whether Congress, BJP Or CPM is above board, but individual politicians, like Nitishji, Narendra Modi, Kapil Sibal, Jairam Ramesh are good performers.
My prediction or even prophecy about the numbered days is borne out by the comments on this message board, all neutral commentators are against Indian sports administrators in particular and politicians in general. We love our sportspersons, NOT corrupt sports administrators.
I am a proud tax payer, your father cannot exempt me from doing my duty, and I will not exempt the GOI from answering my rightful queries, you politicians' washer.

1) I personally contribute financially to NGOs and spend time with them, to improve their lives. My domestic help, earns less than me, but at least enjoys human working conditions with my family, including leave. However, I do pay taxes, and I expect the GOI to explain what they do with my money.
2) I only want to know WHY the F--K there are SO MANY POT HOLES on every road, NOW. Which POT HOLES have been filled LAST YEAR? Why are MOST of them back with every monsoon? You are trying to divert the debate by talking about next 50 years.
3) Which FREE things DO I GET? Please enlist.
4) Guilty as accused. However, its only a matter of time, before I and others like me get into active, electoral politics and whip the a55 of the present corrupt dogs & their washers like yourself. I was delighted when Lalu Prasad Yadav & Prince Charming (possibly both your heroes) were drubbed by Nitishji in Bihar.
I pay taxes with pride and will continue. EVERY Indian has the right to ask and MUST ask and ARE Asking the questions I have raised and shouted.
Pity, I can't say with confidence that YOU are a TAX Payer, all I can say is you're a politicians' washer.

You SOB, paltry sum, your father thinks Rs. 2.4 lacs per annum is a paltry sum?
The rent for a 2 BHK apartment is Rs. 2.4 lacs per annum.
First earn some bread with your own efforts and then comment. Do you even know what it takes to make that kind of money through honest hard work in this country?
I'm an honest, proud self made man. Neither a reserved category, nor inheritor, nor a corrupt third class species, aka politician bureacrat.

No harm in taking some actions by paying a paltry amount and then parallelly try to find the answers of the questions you raised.
Irrespective of what govt does and does not, I just paid a very small amount.
Re: Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????
by Argumentative Indian on Dec 14, 2010 12:24 PM
Atanu, I pay, and not paltry amounts, to local charities. Apart from paying money, I also spend my time, on weekends with poor children along with my family.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????
by Atanu Chatterjee on Dec 14, 2010 12:40 PM
But you know why i paid the small amount without much thinking about what govt didn't that it could have? Because i felt great when preeja and kavitha finished 1-2 in 10000m in asiad and i felt bad when suranjay despite fighting valiantly went down to his chinese opponents which some people say was a judgemental error, I became extremely emotional and proud when abhinav bindra was standing on the olympic podium to recive the gold medal and our national anthem was being played. so on and so forth :). It's more of an emotional decision. I'm sure if spent judiciously, we would get back our moneys' worth.

thats indeed heartening to hear. Wish you achieve success in your effort. May be you can just think of toning down the expectation from the govt. The way it stands as on today, the Govt would continue to do what they have been doing for decades...even then shouldn't deter what we want to do for the country.

Good that you're emotional. Enjoy your life.
I'd like to build a better India, a better India for the poor, the maid servant's family, the farmer, the typist in the private sector, the beggars on the street.
I'm not into sports, so I don't know what's exactly happening on the field, but I understand numbers, and I will improve my country.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????

I'm not upset with the taxes I pay, infact I'm willing to pay more.
I get completely put off when I see the poor of our country KEPT POOR because of the corruption, inefficiency & sloth of our government. The worst CRIMINALS of this country are those who try to absolve this responsibiliyt of the GOI and divert attention using all kinds of stupid ideas & comments, like "Have you never spat on the road yourself, or have you never bribed a cop?" THis is diverting attention with small irrelevant things. MORONS like Giveaids, do not understand, that our athletes will be a lot better if we hold our GOI accountable.
Food crises in India, is NOT because of shortage of food, don't fool yourself. WE are a damn rich country. Few countries on earth, have our kind of natural resources. GOI keeps us poor, people like me are an exception, who have fought & broken the chains of stagnation with personal effort and come up.

Most impressed with your calculating ablities pertaining to Tax.
Could you comment on the rest of the post please, with the same level of accuracy & zeal? Do you agree or disagree with what I'm saying, that most of the sports budget is not spent on training?
Re: Where is $ 11 Billion Going?????????

Majority of sports persons of this country whether they win or loose get a lot of money through products endorsements. Sania Mirza is worth few hundred crores though she has not won any world single titles. Sachin, Kapil, Dhoni, Paes, Mahesh, etc., are also worth few hundred crores. Bindra is already a multi millionaire and is from a affluent family. Padukone is not to be left around. The only players monetarily affected are from hockey and football many of whom lead a miserable daily life. Only they need to be supported. For your information, Saina has booked for an latest Audi car the cost of which is known to all.
Viren is only aiming for another sports scandal in the years to come.

I dont use any endorsed products as the price is enriched. Further I only get one salary per month and cannot afford.

Balas, thats not relevant here. At least sports star make money, because some people (advertisers) perceive, that a lot of people, like sportstars and get influenced by them in their purchasing decisions. This is the free market.
There is nothing perceived or free about taxation. I HAVE to pay Tax, like you or anyother Indian citizen with taxable income. The IT dept., advertises on TV now, that they are aware of all high value transactions. I'm mighty impressed, so where's the GOI's sports budget money, from our taxes, vanishing?
