STOP THIS WORLD CUP DEBATE!!!
by hariharan s on Apr 07, 2010 11:10 AM  | Hide replies

A good player in a good team can produce results...whereas a good player in a weak finds very difficult to find success....Take for eg,Sachin Tendulkar during the 90s,As an opener he does the job well...gives a good start to the team and maintains d run rate...but inspite of scoring a century, after he gets out,the whole team falls like a pack of cards..as an opener,he'had done d job by givin a start..The middle order needs to finish d game..

Similarly,Barca have a strong midfield,an intelligent passer in the form of xavi, dribbling like Iniesta and verstality shown by Alves...he receives the ball and calmly finishes the goal, but in argentina, riquelme is not in national squad,a broken old horse called Juan Veron leads d midfield which has idiotic players like maschareno, sorin etc...

Individual brilliances are best shown in a good team and Messi is lucky to have a good team to support him....

I HOPE THIS ENDS THE DEBATE

Hit the nail on the head. Barca is not just about Messi. They have a great team, players you mentioned who are not only skilled but hardworkers.
The alleound effort culminates in the brilliance of Messi.

Yeah Yeah - we will see how Xavi or Iniesta do in the World cup in South Africa too.

These club level strutters get their come uppance come world cup time and the likes of Zidane can beat Brasil 3-0 .

It certainly is impressive BUT this is club level soccer.

Remember the World Cup is much more conservative and with National level teams the defenders are very very good. Teams also tend to pack the box with 8 players which they do not do at club level.

The reason Pele, Maradona, Zidane were so special is that they could translate the club success to national level soccer.

Messi to date has not done it - he has been bottled up well by Brasilian defenders who see his sort of dribbling in Brasil as well.

But maybe he will...

Messi is yet to play a major role for Argentina in the World Cup. He played a restricted role during the last edition when Riquelme was the main player for Argentina. At this point in time he is unquestionably the best player in the world.

Its true that Messi's Barca level skill has not reflected in his games for Argentina. But you cant say 'Club level' as if its a low grade competetion. In fact skill wise UEFA Champions league is way above World cup matches played by National teams. Barca coach has used Messi skills to win matches for Barca. Its up to Marodona to make sure he continues this with Argentina.

No UEFA is not above World Cup. People who have played World Cup have said so themselves.

In the past Liverpool had two strikers John Barnes and Peter Beardsley who were dynamic strike duo for England - but they were SHUTDOWN by the international World cup defenses.

There are many such examples.

why don't you join "club level" soccer and score a hatrick against Chelsea or Arsenal ....
You should focus more on Khokho and kabbadi and lazim ..

Of course I can't. But Messi is no Maradona or Pele until he proves himself at World Cup level either.

The Football World Cup is the highest level sporting event (a higher level than even Olympics) and no hyped up club level event with bought players of different styles can match up to it.

Dear Nashik Marathi. In national team you can have 2-3 stars in your team..but in club level club owner want best team and he pick best players around world in his team..to score goal against them is great achivement and we should appriciate that..And also you can give same logic that Samprass or Fedrer are not great because they have not won in olympics and play in Grand slam where they do not represent their country...dear u should appriciate and enjoy the class rather then this debate..

Yeah - Take the national Brazilian team and they will kick the crap out of any club team.

We will see what Messi does in the World cup - actually you will see.

When I was in college long time ago and speaking to a South American from Colombia he said the main difference is the the style. You take a German, Russian, Argentinian, Englishman etc and the resulting team plays well but nothing like a driven Brasilian national team where everyone plays the same style and leaves the opponents mesmerised (Unless they are France with Zidane who were even better!).

Not for nothing no European team has ever won the WC outside europe.

Only one SA team has won the WC in Europe - Brasil in 1958 with a 17 year old Pele.

Messi....what a player
by Another Critic on Apr 07, 2010 08:23 AM  | Hide replies

Messi rocks. He scored a goal all by himself from the half line like Maradona and people have already drawn comparisons with Maradona.

After Pele and Maradona, Messi will be making a name for himself. I hope he carries on playing like this.

Pele 2 world cups wins... part of runup to the 1962 victory as well.

Maradona 1 world cup win and 1 runner up.

Messi is scoring goals for Barca - he has done nothing of note yet in World cup. Argentina qualified in 4th place and Messi was not among the first names selected by Maradona.
