it is possible, in Muslims, it is possible to say Kabul Kabul Kabul and if both parties have 'competent' maulavi to confirm it..
strange though it may sound, but it is true.
By the way, earlier in India too, girls were married to photos of groom if the groom was in army or away studying.

Marriage is a social contract in Islam between two individuals. However witnesses are required on both the sides along with bride & groom to solemnize the marriage procedure. So dont get shocked & surprised if u were'nt aware.
