FEDEX IS STILL THE BEST
by gaurish mandrekar on May 30, 2009 06:33 PM  | Hide replies

Guys, have u seen federer play with a double handed back hand? have u seen anyone as classic as fedex is? its not just the power game that wins u matches but the grace that comes up with fedex is unmatchable. ask nadal to play single handed back hands and on a fast court and u will see all the flaws in his game. he is just like ivan lendl who was also boring. never underestmating their potential though but remember form is temporary class is permanent............and fedex is all class.

i agree cent percent with ur comments.. but when u say form is temp and class is perm, just think of nadal as well..

winning 6 grand slams at such a young age doesnt mean he is all form.. nadal is class as well..

we r lucky to see players such as fedex and nadal play at their primes...
note: saifn is the best ;)

Safin is my fav too ;)

U cannot compare on basis of their backhand styles...u cannot ask one to play the other...both have their own styles which are different...most of the players nowdays adopt a two-handed backhand...they have totally contrasting styles of play but are great players in their own right...the best rivalry in tennis history

There are players who are greats. And there are players who are successful. Great players may not always succeed and all successful players are not greats.

For example, in Cricket Sachin Tendulkar is considered a great by many who knows a bit about cricket. But, Sanath Jayasurya, who too have accumulated above 10K runs in Interenational cricket, is not spoken in the same breadth with Sachin. Likewise, even if Nadal goes on to win 50 Grandslams before retiring, there can be no match to Federer. He is a graceful and stylish player, even in losing matches.

Golden oldies...??
by Rajesh Shetty on May 30, 2009 05:46 PM  | Hide replies

Its ridiculous to suggest that Federer is a golden oldie at the age of 27..! I think in Tennis u can continue till 30-32 yrs..if u r fit. Some played even till 40 like Jimmy Connors. So we can expect many more battles between Federer and Nadal in the days to come. Federer seems to be out of sorts nowadays, and also he needs to develop the muscular athletism of Nadal if he can ever think of winning the French Open. But hope this time it happens for a change, just as Nadal won Wimbledon last time. Last match played on clay this month was won by Roger against Nadal in the Madrid Masters. Hope he repeats this act here too. Both Nadal and Roger are God's gift to the game of tennis.

Nadal the Genious
by Krishnappa on May 30, 2009 05:04 PM  | Hide replies

No doubt Federer is a great gentleman and has played superb tennis for several years to feast the hungry fans. But he has passed his best, because age has caught with him. Resurgence is possible but odds are against Federer.

Nadal is young, enthusiatic and down to earth. His rise to No 1 world ranking and holding the same have been phenominal. Does he not play magnificiantly - his brand of tennis and in his own way? Boring tennis? The quality of his game is special and keen followers of the game need not grudge as Nadal has provided variety and spice to the game of tennis.

Nadal is sure to win the French title but for any unforseen circumstance. He is in tremendous form and should sustain for another 2-3 years before he should say good bye to tennis at the age of 26 years, like Borg, and be a legend.

People used to say that Federer was the best tennis player of all times a couple of years ago.

In actual fact he was winning many titles because there were no comparable players then after the retirement of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.

But what is happening now? Nadal has arrived with a bang.

He is highly talented, cool, confident and has a lot of poise. He does not get rattled easily.

Perhaps he will be called the best player of all times in the near future, since he has won Wimbledon last year on grass court and Australian Open this year, on hard court.

It will be a matter of time since I expect him to win more Wimbledon, US and Australian Open titles in the near future.

He is already a king on clay courts.

If images of Federer's reactions in the last French Open final are anything to go by one can be sure that it will be a herculean task for him to defeat Nadal in this year's finals also (if he manages to reach that stage).

I feel that Federer does not have the mental strength of Nadal to come out on tops on all occasions. Remember how he cried at the Australian Open presentation ceremony after his loss to Nadal.

The expressions of despair and defeat written on his face while playing Nadal in the French open final last year clearly told us that he lacks confidence against him on clay courts.

While I offer him my best wishes I do not expect Federer to defeat Nadal this time also.

I don't know how much you know about tennis, but your observation about Nadal is completely wrong. He is a claycourt specialist and we have many such claycourt specialists like Thomas Muster, Kuerten etc etc. Federer is a supremely talented player and someone who is born in centuries. As far as this year's french open is concerned, the whole world will see the great Federer lifting the trophy which will silence his critics forerver.

yes yes yes zaheer ansari you are right and fedex is great... his is very humble and has wonderful class....i wont use any glorifying words as i have already spoken many athings abt fedex...also remember that fedex is carrying a lower back injury from two yrs which he has been hiding, preventing him to serve aces down the line....leave aside fedex ....maybe his time will be over in next 2 yrs...but what abt nadal ..he has already been challenged by simon. monfils. murray and joko......nadal will be injury prone and that is my word........

nadal may be hard working and brilliant but watching fedex play with precision and speed along the line and his single handed backhand which nadal wont be able to master ever will only leave us speechless......one day we will miss fedex's class. he is The Tennis king.....

There have been many players before Federer and there will be many after him who were called the best and would be called the best tennis player. It depends on how one sees 'best'. Federer when playing to his full potential displays a ballet, or a Beethovan's synphony....the sheer economy of movemenet, the sudden busrst of power followed by a delicate touch, the innumerable variations in the forehand and backhand...even Rod Laver cannot match. You follow his eyes when he makes a perfect shot; his eyes are glued to ball, not to where he wants to aim it to go. Nadal is like a tennis machine. He is fortunate that he played Federere so many times that he had picked up a trick or two from Federer's game. Just give Mr. Nadal an year and you would see bim burnt out. Even Tsonga caught him wrong footed. 'Golden retriever' has a limited life span.

you have caught the right eye shiv kumar nadal will be more on the injury side...... he wont be able to retain the shape that fedex has had... ok ok fedex may seem shaky this year at RG but i assure you nadal is not going to win this year at RG whoever he meets in the finals or even before that and will be Heart broken........

Both are great players, while Federer has elegance, style and an aura about his play.
Nadal's got perseverance, grit and a can-do attitude which got him the Wimbledon despite being heart broken for two years in succession by Federer.

I admire both players and hope that this year we see a more evenly contested final. It was a very bad sight of Federer getting bagled in last years RG finals and I hope that he comes up with better goods this time.
Contrary to what you've suggested, I feel that Nadal's a complete player, rather than a clay court player and has won 2 more grand-slams than Federer, when Fed was 22.
However, Federer too is a complete player and I hope he doesn't remain the best clay court player not to have won the RG!
