MENTAL TOUGHNESS
by bob dsouza on Feb 17, 2009 11:35 AM  | Hide replies

Federer is a 'ALL TIME GREAT' no doubt but definately not the 'Greatest' in the modern era of tennis. That has to be Sampras who was mentally very tough,he never failed in the mind against any opponest whether it was Agassi,Becker,Ivanisevic or any other champion who were all great players.Federer has a stumbling block in Nadal and loses matches in the mind before he actually gets down to playing ,surely he is gifted and talented way beyond all above but not the 'Greatest'.It has to be Sampras in my book

But you are forgetting one thing about Federer. Federer never lost his match against unknown opponents while Sampras was beaten by unknown opponents by so many times even from our L.Paes.
It is called consistency. Thats why Federer is best.

Anurag, you are right. Pete did lose to avg players at times, but not at the Slams. Even Roger loses to players like Canas (i think thrice). That doesnt take the greatness away from either Pete or Roger. They are both legends. But when it comes to mental toughness, like Bob said above, its Pete who was stronger. Roger has totally lost it against Nadal in his mind. He still has the game to beat Rafa, but the problem is IN HIS MIND. The world knows it now. It was evident in the presentation ceremony too! Roger's greatness has taken a severe beating because of a mentally strong player called Rafael Nadal.

Whether Rafa will last till he's 27 is the question. I doubt it. He plays a very intense physical game. Already, he has knee problems and now muscular fatigue. This is all due to his extremely physical style of playing. After few years, he'll be older and he will lose speed. Other new players will be there to beat him and federer could probably still be around.

Murray and Verdasco are going to cause pain for Nadal in all future events ... Both of them is equally muscular and have never ending stamina like Nadal ... Who knows they also take the same drug or not ???
