still an underachievement.

Well, the celebrations/adulations should be proportional to the achievements. A mixed doubles title doesnt deserve so much attention. Thanks to the mediocre indians who have low thresholds.

A creditable achievement !!
by Yogesh Hasabnis on Feb 03, 2009 04:54 PM

The mixed doubles title won by Bhuoathi and Mirza in the Australian Open 2009 is certainly a creditable achievement. People may say that it cannot be compared with a Singles title, but still it's worth appreciating. Mahesh Bhupathi has been a great role model for Indian Tennis. He has been the first ever Indian to achieve a Grand Slam title in times when Indians couldn't even dream of winning a Grand Slam tournament in any format of the game. Sania Mirza is more than just a good player. Agreed that she needs a good counseller to remain focussed on tennis and to remain a bit humble and down-to-earth. But she has the capacity to reach the next level and I believe she will do so.

know how to complain, they are the champions at it. If ever there was a competition in complaining, the Indian people would have come first. Complaining and useless debating as well.

To all those bashing Sania/Mahesh

If a win in Grand Slam is nothing, may be you can tell which Indian till date has acheived anything in sports or for that any field.
Sania et al acheivement is worth mentioning given how hostile losers like you are against her. Jankovic (no.1 player) has never won any grand slam. I am sure you people have similar comments about her.

It's not that a win in a GSlam is nothing. Yes they did win. But is a mixed doubles win the hope of a sports loving fanbase? Is that all it takes to celebrate?

Do not say at least an Indian has come so far, if you do - you have very low expectations. Jankovic is a superstar - she has won many grand prix titles, and has ranked in the top 5. Now that is an achievement, and that too for a person from a war torn nation.
Unlike our sponsored media prima donna.

So childish!

A rousing reception for a mixed doubles win! What will they do if by fluke some Indian wins a Grand Slam in the men's or women's event? C Kr said it all in his previous comment.

Mahimgarg, even when Serena and Venus win a grand slam they are not given a rousing reception in the USA. People there expect them to win and that's it.

Cant imagine any country celebrating a mixed doubles win.
by C Kr on Feb 03, 2009 01:29 PM  | Hide replies

It just means we have very low standards and expectations. If an Australian, American or Serb won a mixed, it would barely rate a mention.

Mixed doubles ranks just above women's veterans matches and below men's veterans competition in any GSlam or tournament. Basically, WhO Cares? It's a hopeless way to show you can win something in a field of mediocre players. Does anyone remember such players? In India we do.

In tennis, only singles matters. That too men's singles and some women's singles. No boys junior title matters, cos they rarely do well in the big leagues.

Doubles is for has beens and no hopers. No one will recall these names. It's a depleted and depleting in prominence sideshow

Trying to keep a career with some paltry mixed doubles titles means nothing. None of it means you have the talent at the highest level. It's a lot of chance. If Martina Navratnalova was winning GSlam mixed doubles titles at age 50, that tells you the low standard and ease of play.

yes, and you hold a great standard. people achieve in different fields. This is their field - tennis, and this is their pathetic level. And you are celebrating it, than demanding better.

Fantastic. Back to the usual 'at least they have come this far', than expect the best. This is the standard we have - 'mixed doubles' in a mediocre field. We always think we're capable of mediocrity and anything 2 millimeters above, we celebrate with 'wow, at least an Indian did that'.

Hopeless. Think, people.

Get a life CKr!. Any win at an international championship is big enough!. Do you think the organizers are stupid to include events beyond the Men's and Women's singles and give away prize money. People watch and love some of that action too. Any step in winning is a step forward, nothing to be ashamed of. Congratulations to Ms. Mirza and Mr. Bhupathi - you guys are awesome!.

You dont celebrate if u dont want to. If anyone wants to then u shd not have a problem. Try and achieve something yourself (Let it be mixed doubles of a g slam)first before putting up a frustrated remark. Bloody Looser!!!
