Interesting choice of Tendulkar!
by VASUDEVAN V on Dec 31, 2009 10:13 AM  | Hide replies

It is interesting choice to have Tendulkar as player of the decade. It is a dicey choice. In fact, Times of India (today's Chennai edition) has named 10 Indian atheletes of the decade. It includes Abhinav Bindra, Vishwanathan Anand, Saina Nehwal etc. In cricket the choice in cricket is Ganguly (because of his captaincy which turned around Indian cricket) and Shewag (2 triple hundreds during the decade and a batsman who makes an impact with his very presence at the crease). There is no Tendulkar in the best 10 of the decade.Of course, he was the best the previous decade in cricket (1990-99). I agree more with Times of India than the choice of Rediff in the names of cricketers this decade.

Mr.Shetty: This shows your lack of knowledge about sports in general and cricket in particular. May be, like all Indians, you also worship Tendulkar!

As far as batsman of the decade is concerned the Intl media has named Sehwag as the batsman of the decade. No other player in the history of the game has scored runs like him. 290 runs in less than 5 yrs at more than a 100% Strike Rate. As Kapil Dev rightly said: It is not just difficult to bat like Sehwag but it is impossible to bat like Sehwag'. And the man makes it look easy. After winning the NZ series this year, Dhoni said: Sehwag makes batting look easy whereas in actual fact it is very difficult.The world has not seen a fearless player like Sehwag till date.

Vasu,

I too accept other sport persons that TOI has mentioned. But incase if it has to be impact for the decade, No one other than Sachin should stands tall among others as others that you have mentioned are flashes in the Pan

Mr.Vennelanene: I have to accept your comment with a deadpan face. The leading batsmen of the decade in Test cricket is Ponting, Kallis and Dravid in that order. In one dayers it is Ponting, Tendulkar and.... (I do not remember the third name). So, on what basis you are naming Tendulkar I cannot understand. As I told Shetty, may be you are also one of the worshippers of Tendulkar. By the by, Dravid has 23,000 international runs and Pringle, the English cricketer, has already named Shewag as the crickter of the decade who made the maximum impact. So, your `flash in the pan' comment flies in the face of real statistics!

Moreover Sehwag started playing Test matches only from 2.11.01 onwards. He has played fewer tests than the other players. As far as ODI's r concerned has anyone compared ODI records after playing 214 matches:
Just c this:
Sachin’s ODI record after playing 214 matches
Runs=7971, Strike Rate=85.71
Remove mathces ag minnows like, Zim, Bang, Kenya, Netherlands, UAE,etc
1400 runs in 30 matches
NEt 6571 runs in 184 matches, Ave=35.71 & SR=85.71
Sehwag after 214 matches
Total runs=6924, Ave=34.44, SR=103
Remove record ag minnows
Total Runs=5999, Ave=31.42
SR=103
Sachin's ave is only better by 4.3 runs ag Sehwag but SR lower by nearly 17%. If both SR & Ave r taken together against stronger teams, Sehwag is the better batsman

Sachin became famous in the previous decade because when he arrived on the scene the other batsman were poorer than him, so his efforts seemed to be far superior to the other batsmen in the team. In the present decade, the other batsmen in the team can not only match Sachin in stroke making but better him & can win matches single handedly. Sachin's followers r unable to digest that other players can match or better Sachin. In the previous decade only Sachin would be winning the MOM awards in the present decade other players r doing it more regularly than Sachin

But without sachin' help, both of could not have done nothing in one day and Test cricket.Please Remember 2003 world cup and Tri series in Australia in 2008. In those 2 tournament, he was the best player for india. Man of the tournament in 2003 and Man of the match in the finals in 2008

cricket is a team game boss - not invididual game - if the captain is able to get from everybody he is great - Hence Ganguly is definitely Great - sachin was captain - u know the record

Where is Viswanathan Anand ????

He is arguably, India's best produced sportperson who has single handedly pulled the chess world out of the dominant Russians and brought back a champion in out country outside cricket.
