Salute to the Master
by tn vatsa on Jan 31, 2010 07:14 PM

I was reading few comments around Leander Paes doubting his ability as true champion sportsman. I would like to remind the readers them that there should always be comparision between apple to apple not otherwise.

I can very well remember the era of Ramesh Krishnan and Amritraj Bros. Though India was an average team , no one had expectations from the Indian team to be world beaters. Here comes a young lad from Calcutta who was seems to put aggresion in Indian tennis display at the world arena. This was somewhat similar to the arrival of Kapil Dev to Indian Cricket. We started believing that a WIN wasn't a distant dream.

Statistics are for historians. What matters is whether as an audience those five sets made you feel proud to be an Indian or not..With Leander I surely did and continue to do so...

Hence I would appeal to all , respect atheletes as they are rare species in India.

Cheers!

What Pose
by anilkumar on Dec 19, 2009 08:38 PM  | Hide replies

See the Pose above,Leander knows to market himself,he is almost holding his breadth to inflate his chest. His hands are back, just to expand his chest muscles and bisceps.
He maybe a strong guy,but he mostly uses his strength against Girls and Amateur Tennis Players as in Mixed doubles,,what a Sham

I agree with Rahul below,i think most people gets carried away by media reports, the fact is doubles and mixed doubles is like an exhibition match and should be treated as that.

im really sorry mate , everyone plays sports and there are few aspiring sportmen in every sport but really the fact is doubles and mixed doubles isnt really worth mentioning ,heck if there is rain they cancel the doubles and give top priority to singles, why would they completely abandon a grand slam final mixed doules if it was sooo important, doubles is for losers ,back people like pankaj advani who deserve accolades not leander paes , hes downright mediocre , he mght be a gem of a person(according to some people on this forum) but hes no great sportsperson and talkin bout cricket , cricket gets decent coverage in many countries and its a big summer sport in most countries , and before i get the standard low calibre question back at me ie "what have u done with ur life blah blah" let me tell u im a 3d animation student and im very much successful in my own right' atleast im not going for media frenzy id rather work for pixar then work for avanti animation or some other below average studio if u get my point

LOL

In mixed doubles, it's basically the men who target the female partner. In effect, it is Paes winning agaisnt some 19 year old female alongside a female partner.

He should be ashamed of playing vs girls and tennis failures.

Paes has no talent
by Viv Richards on Dec 17, 2009 08:27 PM  | Hide replies

I've been to Wimbledon and the likes of Paes play on one of the outside courts (like court 18 or something). You don't even need a ticket to watch it! LOL

When the mixed doubles final is played (usually after the men's final), 90% of the people have already left and the court is empty. It just shows how much people rate it.

Doubles and mixed doubles is for tennis failures who couldn't make it. Singles is what counts. Even Paes would agree with this. He would gladly return all his useless doubles titles for a couple of singles grand slams.

@Viv and @anil,
what did u want to say here???Paes has no talent, bcoz paes won in doubles and in doubles top singles players never play........so according to u all Indian cricketers had no talent, just of the fact that cricket is only played in 8-9 countries and still fewer countries than played in grandslams doubles..

1st of all try to appreciate someone who made us proud by winning olympic medal and den who was the reason of flying Indian flag in grandslams.........

no doubt he is one of the best sportsman of India and he is at par with Anand and sachin.......it is not his fault that India didnot produce federer or nadal or tiger woods...if u had a problem with him please play in some sports and represent India and win like woods, nadal or federer and den comment here......

No 73 in the world
by anilkumar on Dec 17, 2009 08:06 PM  | Hide replies

A Search for Paes on web, there is a wikipedia dedicated to him.His highest ranking was No 73
in 1998 and for that he had received Padma Shri award by the paan chewing, dhoti clad sports committe.Ofcourse he made a name in doubles,a tournament where good players usually plays for want of warm up matches. He also made India proud by playing mixed doubles, ofcourse there is no world ranking for that, nobody, but only indians watches it,the stadium is empty expect for indians ,who thinks its a matter of honour to be there.
I dont mean to downgrade our sportsmen, but people have to realise, that we are making a joke of ourself, lets wait until we have a good enough tennis player.

Paes is a joke
by Viv Richards on Dec 17, 2009 07:11 PM  | Hide replies

He should show his class against the likes of Federer, Nadal, Murray and Del Potro. Instead, he plays against/with 18 yr old girls in mixed doubles. It's downright pathetic.

How many singles grand slams has this joker won? Only in India will such mediocre talent (for want of a better word) get recognition. He is spoken of like he is in the same league as Borg or Sampras.

The usual counter-argument is "what have you done" or "it's easy to criticise but have you played competitive tennis". It is a weak argument. Everyone critcises the Indian cricket team (and rightly so) at various times. Can you bat better than Dhoni or Tendulkar?

India would land of snake charmers until people stop thinking the way you are. He is going to be 36 and still competent enough in doubles and mixed doubles tennis. I think you don't know that he is the one who defeated tennis legends like Ivanisevic and Sampras also in his best days and narrowly missed against Agassi in Olympics where he earned bronze medal for India. Was n't that an achievement.

@Viv
the point people try to make when they say "what have you done" is that they can't make broad generalised statements about things they don't have any idea about unlike you.
Paes is one of the best we have and if you have kept track of indian tennis you would have recognised for what he has done and not for what he hasn't done.
>Leaving that aside he isn't just a passer by mixed doubles champ he has also won numerous men's doubles championships , now for the sake of argument you will forget his achievements and will mention there too he has lost against federer but you will fail to see he has won against the best numerous times with his most credible partner >Bhupathi against the men's doubles champs like mark woodforde and tod woodbridge more than once , he has beaten the likes of leyton hewitt in doubles what do you say to that?? john mcenroe was a regular in the double's circuit , so is it something to write off??
paes has won the singles bronze circumstances and his own priorities stuck with doubles because that gave him the maximum leverage in his career.
your failure to identify his talents and making stereotypical self loathing indian like arguments only justifies your inexperience. none compare him to borg, becker or sampras, all national sporting icons are celebrated so more local champs might be inspired to do better. u think ur the only intelligent person and others are stupid..well u got some facts, figures and real life experience lacking .

Slayer,

Both doubles and mixed doubles is for tennis failures. Every players aspires to be a singles champion and those that can't play doubles.

Regarding the great John Mc, he is widely known for his singles wins and his famous games against Borg. No one gives a damn about his doubles. If he has not played singles, no one would have rated him as a great player.

He has won an Olympic Medal for India, that too in SINGLES competition, he has upheld our countries honour countless number of times in Davis Cup, beating likes of Goran Ivanisevic (former Wimbledon SINGLES champion) in SINGLES competition.

Has fought cancer, and came back to win Grand Slam.

It is sad that in our country true heroes are treated like this.

Now dont be kiddish and bring mahima chaudhary in it. In that case how about Tiger Woods? In your opinion he must be as bad as Paes as he is sleeping around with prostitutes.
The reality is people like you(frustrated NRIs or too US obsessed..if am not wrong) cant recognize talent from other countries. They will do "Wah Wah" for even a small achievement of west and will let no stone unturned in rediculing others. Talk about USA with world class infrastructure even then they are not producing grand slam winners or about England who have such a big county cricket but yet to win a single major cricket tournament. Buddy change your attitude or stop visiting indian news sites, i know you wont as there are no takers for ur desi attitude at other places. Keep frustrated...best for u.
