Federer has proved that he is the best. Though the finals win was a very hard earned one, yet he maintained his cool and went on to be the winner.
The end result counts and he did it. 15 Grand Slam titles and 16 masters title so far is no joke!

Being at the top of the game for 237 consecutive weeks is another impossible milestone to break. Playing at such high level and maintaining the fitness is not easy. He lost the number one ranking briefly due to his fitness and now that Federer is back with a vengeance.

Rafeal Nadal
by Guest on Aug 24, 2009 01:54 PM  | Hide replies

I dont know why some take liking for Nadal. He is ugly to watch with his mannerism of pulling his underwear everything he gets into serve and will receiving also. He is awkward with his running around and retrieving, which may work in clay coarts and not in hard courts. Now he might be seeded 3 in US and should Roger Federer in the semis itself if he make it thus far.

Nobody plays Tennis with as much passion as Nadal. Federer was born with a lot of talent, and Nadal was not. Nadal still had the guts to believe he can beat the best and he has done it. He may be ugly to look at, but the way he puts everything into every single point, it makes even likes of Federer doubt themselves. Whatever Nadal has earned, he has earned with the sweat of his brow. Nobody should grudge him anything. Add to it his fantastic sportsmanship and conduct off-court. Can a bull have those kind of manners? Let him regain his fitness. He is capable of winning as many French titles as number of Slams others are able to win.

Here is one.
Rafael Nadal dethroned Federer from the top, when Federer was at his peak. How many players have been able to do it? Federer himself, when he got to the top, there was a vacancy there after the retirement of Sampras. No mean feat that. Federer is great alright, but Nadal is no less. He is going to regain his crown. Just let his knee recover.

nobody is denying rafa's class..but how sustainable will his domination(if it were to happen again) be?his game is too physically exacting.

You are wrong to say that Nadal dethroned Federer when Fed was at peak! In fact Fed was recovering from mono and thats why his comparatively inferior show during 2008. This period aws used by several other players to get prominence. Nadal is not a mean player. He is also a champion and the only one who could challenge Fed. Dont argue, but enjoy the game!

Dear Patil: Nadal's game is too physical to last long. He played with a single minded obsession of beating Federer and attaining the world no.1 status, caring two hoots for his body. He pounded away on the clay courts of Europe (his most favourite surface) day in and day out to garner points to attain the world no.1 status. He brought the same game to the Wimbledon and to the hard courts, caring little for the pressure on his knees. The results are there for everyone to see. If you have seen him play in Toronto and Cincinnati Masters, you would have noticed the worry lines on his face - at the back of his mind was the wobbly knees. You become great by not merely winning but also by taking care of your body to ensure that you play for long without injuries. Like they say in Hindi, `Lambhi race ki goda hona chahiye'. No one questions Nadal's abilities as a player. But, his body is certainly a question mark. For him to achieve the status of Federer, he has to win and also ensure that his body is ok. You have ended saying, just let his knee recover -- the question is, will it recover enough for him to pound away, especially on the clay courts of Europe? Remember he is now getting older and more youngsters with the ability to run him down are streaming in!

Hello Sir. After a long time.
You are experienced enough to know that nothing in this world is permanent. Federer was no. 1, lost it and regained it, and may lose it again. Who knows? Murray is too close to him!
Nadal was no.2 for so long, became no.1, lost it and of course he may regain it again.
'Great' is a word used very loosely in India, but even if you apply international standards to decide the merit of Rafael Nadal, you cannot deny Greatness to him. For his exploits in 2008 alone, he will be called a Great player.
Right now, he is troubled by his knee alright, but is still able to make it to the semi-finals and finals. Even in this condition, only the best (say Top 5) are able to beat him. I have no doubts whatsoever that he is going to regain his touch just like Federer has. And even if he is unable to regain the no.1 crown, he will always be remembered as the player who dethroned Federer when Federer was at his peak.

oh yeah???federer was at his peak in 2008 when nadal dethroned him??i thought federer was being beaten by all and sundry last year...

better put it this way....

nadal at his peak dethroned federer while he was going through his leanest patch in last 5 years...

make no mistake, federer at peak cannot be beaten by any other player on the tour(nadal inclusive)...

Yes, nothing is permanent Patilji and Federer did lose his no.1 status and will certainly lose it again. We are not talking here about the permanent, impermanent and transient things. That is philosophy and beyond me (perhaps not beyond you!!!). Here we are talking only about the greatness of a player. Yes, in India the word `great' or greatness is bandied about. The word `great' can be applied to Nadal for his performance in 2008 - i.e. a specific year. When I say Federer is great, naturally it means one of all time greats and perhaps the best of them all barring Rod Laver. Nadal, no doubt, is a great clay court player (that is why his body is what it is today), but he has to achieve much more on the Tennis courts to be equated with Laver, Federer, Sampras, Borg etc. Coming back to Nadal dethroning when Federer was at his peak, was Federer really at his peak in the year 2008? (that specific year again!). Nadal has to take care of his body and for that he may have to change his style of play. If he does that, will he be the same Nadal again? That is the million dollar question!

one could also look at the tremendous efforts that nadal puts down for his victories in a much more positive way...the kind of determination and grit that rafa shows on court is unmatchable....even federer is far off in that respect...

i am sure majority of the people acknowledge that federer is the most gifted and skillful player on tour currently and probably even all-time....but nadal has the nerves and grit to overcome his lack in artistry....

i am an avid fedex fan and i wish federer showed more of these in his matches throughout...he's good enough to win purely on his skill against others but nadal demands a 100% federer in his matches

oh come on,dont cry all over again...

these 2 great champions will keep swapping their roles, and both of them will have their share of success...what is there to brag about???

i just hope each of them keep coming back hard while the other soars, for years to come...that's more fun...

and by the way, according to simon reed & mcenroe, andy murray is the true no 1 and the 1st favourite to win many of the future grand slams...so there's no point in case for fedex and rafa supporters...LOL...total crap...murray is definitely not worth all that british hype...
