Venus survives tough test from Sania
by Virendra Singh on Apr 16, 2009 11:12 AM

Ok so she lost. But it was by far one of Sania's best effort in recent years. Venus actually had to fight real strong (not for nothing she is one of the best in world).
Well played Sania.

The problem lies in the fact that she, like many others who write on the forum, feel that she can be content with whatever she has achieved today. The burning desire to excel is simply not there in her. By the time she retires, she will hold the record for maximum 2nd round losses.

Sania is improving and yes she played tough as she made Williams to fight in till the 3rd set to win........we need to appreciate and encourage our Indians who are shining our names in all the places. It is easy to simply say but just put yourself in their shoe and feel the heat.

FYI, she is already in international tennis for 5 or 6 years and usually, good international players already reach their peak well within this period. Did it take Venus Williams 10 years to reach no. 1?

Tadaham, if your daughter aims to become a tennis player and excel in the sport, please dissuade her from having Sania as a role model. There are many better international woman players who will be better role models.

If your daughter just wants to play for fun like Sania, without a big ambition, then let Sania be her role model!

BM, I have some doubts that you are a true son of Indian, it is possible that you m0m had mixed imported raw material in you blood. I am proud to be an Indian and feel more proud when Indian shine. Sania has done big job and wish Mr. Tadaham for his daughters dream, May Mighty God will help her to became no.1 in the world LT.Jai Hind.

I am a true Indian unlike you. I would like to see an Indian girl win a grand slam tournament and not just participate in them! If girls have Sania as their role model, their ambitions will be limited by her success. No harm in being inspired by Sania, but don't have her as a role model!

One can never be winner by having moderate ambitions.

I fully support BM,he is absolutely ri8,nodoubt sania is talented but she is not putting any gr8 effort to improve herself . she was a far better player 2 yrs back than wat she is now.She is the only grl representing india internationally nd we all re proud of her ,but she has taken all these for granted. She shld rather think tht she has this uphill task 2 take indian tennis 2 a new level whch everyone can lookup to rather than involved in controversies nd link ups.Come on sania no more 2 round defeats, u hav it in u 2 become a world beater. just focus in ur game nd make the whole country proud.

Comparing dhoni nd cricket to tennis is ridiculous, admit tht sania is not good nd a bettr playrs in india goes to bhupathi nd paes fr they have won grand slams nd wer #1. Tennis is a tough game nd very competitive be it singles, doubles, or mixed nd thers so much excitement in tennis rathr in useless game i.e cricket.

You may be right in ur analysis of sania mirza bt dhoni nd cricket hs less popularity in terms of nations competing, evn thy have less nations thn say badminton nd swimming.

Australia's cricket heroics may be noticed since evn they ar tops in other sports nd in olympics. Bt nt fr south africa, england, nd india crickt success' is limited to these countries only nt across the world.

Sania hs it in her to win it bt don't quite understnd her playin fr her country, i mean whts the big deal. Tennis is not one country vs another, its an individual's game. Sania shud stop playin charades w.proud to be indian nd makind india happy nd all tht stuff.

Come on, if she can't gr bettr coach in india, its not goin to help her nd she needs to put herself first nd be competitive nd let india worry about itself.

Sania is definitely not the best icon to represent international tennis. There are hordes of international tennis players better than her. There are 2 reasons why she has got a bigger celebrity status than what she deserves -

1. Because she is pretty
2. There is a total vaccum in Indian woman's tennis. Although she is nobody on the international scene, she is the only players that Indians can cheer and look up to, despite her not so great international performance.

Guts and will to excel? What a joke! Where and when has she demonstrated guts and will to excel? By the time she finishes her international career, she will hold the record of maximum 2nd round loses. If she had a little bit of killer instincts, she would have won at least a few of those tough 3 setters which she always ends up losing.

When Someone criticizes Sania, many people, I notice, say that "why don't you play".

Boss, that is not my job. I am a very good software professional and due to me, our company is snatching projects from Americans or rest of the world.

When someone is associated with something, he/she should do the best. There is no problem with Sania. This is what her capability is. It's the media who made her a queen (without any crown !!), people are reacting.

Ok fine. "why dont you play' argument is not correct.
However, can you consider yourself the best S/W prof in India. If not, can I critisize you for not being one. She is playing best to her abilities and is India's no 1 for last 4-5 years. Instead of critisizing her, let us help create more sportspersons who can match your high expectations.

She's India's best, no doubt, but on the international scene, she is NOBODY. If you think that her being the best Indian player is reason enough to accord her such hype and celebrity status, then you can jolly well sing praises on her.

No other national champion gets the same celebrity status as Sania. Sania is the most fortunate sportswoman in our country today.

I seriously doubt it. So your comparison is flawed. Sania has been terrific. So what if not #1 in the world?

Dear JGN, I too am a part of the Offshoring business (and feel no shame in it). Today this industry is over $20 billion (a conservative estimate, I'm sure its much higher) and incidentally the biggest export from our country. All the sops the govt offers to farmers, no hike in rail fares, etc etc is because of the high income tax we pay and the money we bring into the country. I am awake, its your turn to get your head out of the sand and stop behaving like an ostrich.

It seems people who are following International tennis closely and are knowledgeable about the game know what Sania deserves for the kind of game she plays.

But people who are just attracted and fans of her seeing her pinups and posters blindly support her even if she looses in straight sets or retires hurt or whatever she does that she doesn't deserve to be a sports idol for our country.

Wake up men, see what our national Hockey team is achieving, look at how Russians are flocking International tennis. Sania is really nothing in the International scene. Just because there is no one else in our womens category praising her this much sounds too stupid. She looks pretty and has good assets that why she sells.

Compare her with other Indian girls. You are talking as if loads of Indian girls came in after her and have reached the top 10. She is still the only lady who has represented India in that level. Bring your level of expections according to her talent and abilities, you wont be disappointed.
