Leander
by Ranjan on Sep 20, 2008 04:43 PM

He did well to step down as captain. Now Mahesh and Prakash will know the difference between them and Leander. He is a great Davis Cupper in doubles and singles. Prakash and Somdev are third tier players. Bopanna got caried away by the rhetoric of Mahesh. Teams must be led by inspirational men like Leander. Winning the 1st singles or equalling in the 2nd would have helped the other sindles player gan confidence.

Young all right ...

"Hanescu thundered his way to a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 win over young Somdev Devvarman in an hour and 24 minutes after ..." Now let us see how young Somdev is - DOB(1985-02-13) (age 23) which means he is more than a year older than NADAL 1986-06-03. Borg retired when he was 26. Just having a BABY face does not make people young. Stop calling him young Somdev ... More than 50% of players on ATP tour are younger than he is.

Being 23 does not mean he can't break into top 50 or 100. There are many players who have bloomed late in their tennis career. Benjamin Becker was in top 50,even he is NCAA champion like somdev and turned pro at 23. Somdev has just turned pro and already ranked within 250 and he has only 12 ATP points to defend till june 09 that mean he can easily break into top 200 and can be closed to 100 if have decent results

ha you mean the other players who have better ranking than him would give him a cake walk to break into the top 50 - 100.

Samething was said about Sania Mirza, Look where she is.

My judgement of him being in top 150 is on his current form where he seems to doing better than any other indian men player has done in a decade. He won his 1st challanger title in his 1st month of professional tennis in USA and that is a rare performance. Only two current Single indian player Harsh Mankad and Rohan Boppanna has won only one challenger that also after being in tour for years. Unlike other indian player he is a baseliner and not serve-volley player. He has already beaten top 100 players like Sam Querry, Robert Kendrick, Bobby Reynolds.Even sania achieved top 50 ranking. To be in top 100 or 50 continuously will be tough as by then his game would be known. It depends how he improved his game in tour and learn from experience.

Misplaced
by Shyama Sreenath on Sep 19, 2008 09:00 PM  | Hide replies

Our confidence reposed on Somdev was highly misplaced, but with a little bit of form Prakash Amritraj could have won. His lay off did him bad. We have to do some fast thinking to keep our qualifying for World group alive, since Japan, China and Thailand may overtake us.
