its singles buddy

its interesting that people in r country(india)have no clue about the fact that the only yardstick to judge tennis players in singles and doubles does not matter coz we have never had anybody win a slam in singles whereas lee and hesh have won slams in doubles.the fact is that the only top player that we have had is ramanathan krishnan(our only top 10 player though not a great player as he did not win a slam or reach in a final for that matter but i do believe that he is our greatest ever sportsperson as he is the only top sportsperson we have produced in a global sport).
the only mid-level players that we have had are vijay, ramesh and sania(our only top 50 players).
the rest of our players have been low level players as there ranking has always been outside the top 50.
in countries that have been tennis powerhouses-it is assumed that when you talk of tennis, you talk of singles.
we have this biased sunil gavaskar who makes lee and hesh's slams sound as if they have come in the actual tennis which is the singles.
coming back to the davis cup-we will loose 4-1 coz their singles players are better than ours never mind that they have the huge home advantage.

Som Dev originally comes from Tripura.

That Som Dev originally comes from Tripura is all the more important. And I think Prakash Amritraj,Bopanna,Sania Mirza has nothing more to offer to Indian Tennis. They have already achieved what they are capable of.

I'd beg to disagree... Amritraj still has some game left in him. Sania needs to recover from her wrist problem. Bopanna - I don't know much about him.

A genuine chance
by kamal harish on Sep 18, 2008 07:56 PM

the doubles match is already in the bag...all we have to do is to beat the weaker player twice which is quite possible...i wont be surprised if Somdev beats Hanescu considering the way he played against a Top 15 player Almagro...a few points here and there and he would well have won that match...Watch out for this kid...the best thing about him is he has an extremely calm and mature head on his shoulders..

Somdev Devvarman (also known as Somdev Dev Varman) is the reigning and two-time NCAA Men's Singles Champion. As a recent graduate out of the University of Virginia who hails from India, Somdev is best known for having captured the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship by defeating Georgia Bulldogs senior John Isner in the final. In one of the most dramatic finals in the 123-year history of the tournament, Devvarman scored a 7–6 (7), 4–6, 7–6 (2) win over the tournament's No. 1 seed. A year later, he defeated Tennessee's J.P. Smith 6-3, 6-2 to take home his second consecutive NCAA Singles National Championship. It was his historic third consecutive appearance in the NCAA singles final.

Amateur Results
---------------
Devvarman's achievements place him as arguably the greatest player in college tennis history. He finished both 2007 and 2008 as the top-ranked player in the NCAA, compiling an unprecedented 44-1 record in the latter year. Three of Devvarman's college conquests--John Isner, Kevin Anderson and Jesse Levine--have gone on to enjoy successful pro careers

Professional Results
--------------------
Devvarman officially started his professional career in June 2008 at the $10,000 Futures tourney in Rochester, NY where he won the singles title. He and his former UVa partner, Treat Huey, won the doubles title. The next week at another $10,000 Futures tourney in Pittsburgh, Devvarman and Huey won the doubles title and Devvarman repeated in singles.

Devvarman made the final of the Kennedy Funding Invitational in New York in July 2007. In a clay-court non-tour event which featured several players ranked within the ATP top-150, Devvarman defeated Ricardo Mello, Robert Kendrick (ranked 99th) and Justin Gimelstob before losing a tight three-set match to no. 69 Michael Russell in the final. He returned and won the tournament in 2008 beating Sam Querrey, ranked #44, and Dudi Sela, ranked #76 along the way.

On July 27, 2008, Devvarman won the Lexington Challenger, first coming through qualifying and then beating players including Bobby Reynolds (ranked 90th), Xavier Malisse and Robert Kendrick to take the title. He received automatic entry into the Vancouver Open starting July 28th and made it through to the quarterfinal before Go Soeda handed him his first professional defeat.

In August 2008 Devvarman made the quarterfinal of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, first beating Sam Warburg, Jamie Baker and Go Soeda to qualify and then dispatching Taylor Dent and Robert Kendrick in the main draw before falling to Russian Igor Kunitsyn.

Remote
by Shyama Sreenath on Sep 18, 2008 04:14 PM

Our chances are indeed remote with a rising Somdev may find it difficult to cope up with the tougher Davis Cup stage. Prakash is bit erratic and inconsistent.Bopanna's fall is attributed to this kind of show and he has let us down. We are sure to take the doubles in our kitty, let us hope and pray for our team to come out with a marvelous performance

LET US SINCERELY HOPE THAT THIS YEAR INDIA WILL QUALIFY FOR WORLD GROUP.ONE THING IS SURE THAT EVEN IF IT QUALIFIES,THE TASTE OF SUCCESS WILL BE SOUR THAN SWEET DUE TO INFIGHTING AMONG THE PLAYERS.THE REVOLT AGAINST PEAS WAS CERTAINLY DISGRACEFUL.
