I am surprised why some people showing such disregard to the greatest player of all time. yes he has little experience as coach but he is a born genius. IMO he will emulate beckenbauer as the only man to have won the world cup as a captain and coach… Dont forget that C.Bilardo who was the coach when Arg last won the WC in 1986 with Maradona will be his assistant and advisor that will give confidence and winning mentality for Argentina my fave team !

Emotionally I want Argentina to succeed.I want Diego to succeed. But the Argentine team, despite boasting the greatest talents in soccer, along with Brazil, are always indiscliplined in their display at WCs, post maradona period. They score heavily in their initial matches and waste all their energy and lose the knockout match.A professional display matters, and thats why teams like Germany,Italy,Brazil always fare well in long tournaments. Not Holland,Argentina,Spain who probably has more talented players in their ranks(at par with Brazil).i dont see a much of a change even if Diego takes over as coach. If anything happens, it would be due to the inspiration the side gets.As he is seen as god in Argentina or elsewhere by Soccer fans.

I think rightly or wrongly, European style soccer has taken over, with more emphasis on defence. and quick counterattacks. Basically defend with 5 people at the back, and hope to sneak a goal on a quick attack. After that defend with 8 men at the back :). Italy comes to mind. And many african/american nations are following suit. Hope still there for the latin fans in the euro2008(Spain/holland/russia played fluently). Classic case was the 2006 WC b/w ger vs Arg. Tactcs won over flar. Thats gonna be the future too i think
In addition to being a fan of Euro football, i also loved Brazil. But their results are poor(0-0 aginsst bolivia!). Also robinho was their latest talented player, and no one really caught the eye. ronaldinho is past it(now he's fat) Same for ronaldo, adriano. I think only Kaka and robinho can be called world class. A sad fall, considering the 11 world class players Brazil played in the 70's
When Argentina appoints the national hero as their football coach... Why all that fuzz? Maradona is a legend…..Basile's tenure already proved that it takes a lot more than a collection of really good players to succeed as a national team coach……let’s see what the best footballer ever have to offer…. I believe Klinsman didnt have much experience before taking over Germany and was heavily criticized before he even had a chance to prove him self, but look what he's done pretty much gave that national team a new life. I can't wait to see this Argentina team in its upcoming qualifiers.

Diego is pure talent, the best ever player, the most liked sportsman. But as history shows that the greatest soccer talents are very indiscliplined in their lifestyle.Diego certainly is.And coaching requires disclipline and not just soccer talent.Hence, one cant be sure that he will weave magic as coach, like the way he did in the field.Lets see....

Klinsmann and Germany were superb in 2006! Thats a rare case of a national icon/coach nationality
Maradona is the reason why we know Argentina as such a huge super power country of football. He is the sole reason why todays Argentina and its players are the favourites of everyone around the world. He is the only reason which has made most of us like me follow football...

U guys are ignorant of Europe man..Maradona is not the reason..EPL is the only reason man. Thanks to coverage on weekends, and watching fantastic players like Ron,Rooney, lamps,StevieG, etc is the reason why our generation loves football. Maradona is history. May he live long

sandeep, u see the present and pass ignorant comment on the past.U must be passionate about the sport to comment in this forum, as u are the only ignorant blooger yet here.Your football started from 2000.There is a long history before that. The Rooney,Kooney u are speaking of are not the greatest players of the game.Instead try to see the clips of the greatest of the game-Maradona,Pele,Garincha,Crueff,Boby Moore,Bekenbauor,Uesebeo,Lev Yasin,Puskas...and so many others.Histroy will remember this names forever, Rooney and Becham are just players of few matches and more of media hype.

Absolutely.Being Indian, a lot of people like me has made him our sporting heros along with our favorite cricketers.Maybe he is the most liked hero ,sporting hero ever to have born.I wish he comes to India...I am sure there will be total standstill in places like Kolkata, if ever he visits the city.
The influence of Maradona in Napoli, an italian province, is such that even after quiting Napoli 15 yrs back, Maradona is literally worshipped even today there. In 1990 WC semis against italy, held in napoli, the whole stadium supported Argentina for maradona, and not italy , their country.Unthinkable influence. This can never happen with other sports personality.

Thomas thats a load of rubbish. I remember that game against ITALY. infact all maradona fans that day turned against him. He became a villain that day.
"What Zidane can do with a football, Maradona can do with an orange"-Famous quote by soccer legend Michel Platini. This says a lot about the short man.
Re: How great was this man?
by sandeep kumar on Oct 30, 2008 08:33 AM
Zidane is one of the gods man...Maradona never had Zidans elegance and that caressing touch, and the ability to pass a killer ball to the strikers. Zidane is from another planet.
Re: Re: How great was this man?
by thomas on Oct 30, 2008 11:31 AM
Zidane is great player and post maradona best player, no doubt. But dont try to compare a Dravid with Tendulkar.Dont try to compare the man who can singlehandedly win World Cup or big European Club cups playing with very ordinary teams.Ha, about Ball control, dribbling, ball skills and passing there is no one who can be 50% of Diego. That is refleted in Platini's statement.
Re: How great was this man?
by thomas on Oct 30, 2008 11:23 AM
Platini is a better football pundit than sandeep kumar.Dont try to prove your foolishness. You have been doing this again and again.Maradona is the god of football, as per football fans over the world, and this is not true for Zidane or Sandeep.
1990 World cup team of Argentina in Italy were a group of rowdy hooligans.......brutal ruthless tackling, negative defensive play, diving in penalty area and boorish behaviour with referees.....that was the hallmark of the Argentina team that made it all the way to the final.....
Re: 1990 World cup Argentina team were a group of hooligans!!
by thomas on Oct 29, 2008 05:18 PM
They were lucky ,yes. And not many thought they woulf make it to finals. But they played and went to finals. They beat sides like Italy and Brazil. So u cant take it as fluke.Against Italy ,one of the favorites of 1990 WC, they played great soccer.Against Brazil in Quaters, just the million dollar pass from Maradona, despite sufferring from injury and playing with pain killers, brought the Cannigia goal. You can say Diego's awe cost the opponents their matches against maradona.there were atleast 3-4 markmen against Diego in each of the matches.
Re: Only one thing to say about Maradona
by thomas on Oct 29, 2008 05:12 PM
I consider them equals in their sports. But I would love to see maradona's skills more.Sachin however, never acheieved what Diego has-Take his team to tournament victories,WC wins. And even if Sachin becomes a part of Indian WC victory ever, he wont have to take his team single handedly. There are so many stars in indian cricket team.
Re: Only one thing to say about Maradona
by ravi shankar singh on Oct 29, 2008 08:37 PM
Do not compare them. They belong to sports and countries that are poles apart. But personally,I'd put my money on Maradona and soccer anyday.
People who saw Diego in 1986 would not think twice to say that there could be no better skill ful player in Soccer.Pele might be ahead of him in terms of scoring and striking abilities, but the artistry? The dribbling, the skill, the runs with the ball, the ball control, the passing? No , noone can ever match the Argentine. His achievement? 1986 WC win with individual brilliance, brilliance never seen in a team sports. His taking Napoli, a third division Italian team to the top of Europe, Seria League victory(most competative league in 1980-90) is unthinkable achievement. It's like someone taking the Bangladesh cricket team to being the world's best.Diego played singlehandedly in his coutry's and clubs success, captained them and gave them tournament vicories-Youth WC in 1978, WC in 1986,WC runners in 1990.(for Argentina). This plus 2 European Club cups in 1980s to napoli and the Seria Leaugue title. Drugs cant impact one's creativity, so Maradona is never belittled by his attachment with Cocaine. He is also the most popular and loved sportsman accross any sports in modern era-So much so that the bangladeshi students created stir to stop an exam on Maradona's WC day.Any other sportsman? No.Its only Diego Armando Maradonaaaaaa.
