That's because in chess, most of the tournaments take place in the European circuit, so at his level of competition a base in Europe is useful. Same with tennis, Paes & Bhupati at their peak had bases in the US. Even Prakash Padukone based himself in Denmark for 3 years when he was at the top. If u are amongst the best then u have to be where the top competition exists, otherwise your game will suffer. That does not mean that any of them are not proud Indians. Only when an entire season of top level tournaments start being held here will the situation change.

US $ 2.35 million equally split for finalists
by mg on Oct 26, 2008 06:38 AM

Why should the prize money be equally split...
maybe they knew Anand will win and didn't want Kramnik to lose out on the prize money atleast.

Anand should be conferred Bharat Ratna now
by hari ray on Oct 26, 2008 01:00 AM  | Hide replies

What is the point giving him the award when he is old and frail? What more he needs to achieve? In a truely global sport, he has been a leading force for over a decade.

And if Amartya Sen was given the award immidiately after winning Nobel, it is time Anand gets it NOW

விசுவநாதன் ஆனந்த் should be given the award, no doubt. I've a feeling it is not being given for few years now.

Anand will most probably get it by Sunday or Monday
by Kunal Das on Oct 25, 2008 11:20 PM

Anand needs 1 point more - 2 draws or 1 win. Here a mature player goes for 2 draws (equivalent to 2 singles in cricket when u are at 98) and a flamboyant player goes for 1 win (like hitting a four at 99) - let us see how Anand brings it home. Both are welcome :)

Southies has brought more glory to nation-
1)All top scientists from south.
2) Even most of top worldclass sportspersons in India are from south - Chess- Anand
Tennis- Amritraj,Krishnan, Bhupati, sania
Badminton- Padukone,Gopicahand
Athletics- PT usha, walsamma, Anju Georze etc
Cricket- Prassana,Venkatraghvan,Kumble, Dravid etc
Hockey- Dhanraj pillay.

BTW I am a north Indian but accept the fact that over all south indian(including Maharashtra/Gujrat) are much more developed than North Indian in all aspect of life- Study, sports, culture etc.

garry kasparov once said that if anand would have been exposed to russian style training since childhood, like other russian players like him have, then he would hve been totally invincible

விசுவநாதன் ஆனந்த் doesn't require. He himself is able to beat all Russians.
Maybe they've to improve the training for themselves to beat விசுவநாதன் ஆனந்த் !

In advance congratulation to Viswanathan Anand, he is someone who has always made India proud but still had a low profile.

Keep going and reach many many greater mile stones.

Viswanarthan is the world champion.Nobody celebrates that We always think of cricket. When there is olympics we moan about the absence of medal winning person. When one wins we rightly are happy. When non citizen Indian American faces danger in the Spacecraft we perform pujas for her safty. What sort of people we Indians are? irrational, emotional and covetuos

His reputation is more than Tendulkar's but not earnings. Chess does not have good sponsors yet. Something should be done to take this sport to the masses (May be they should create some Anand-Kramnik controversy just like they have done it in Harbhajan-Symonds-Ponting case to pull crowds to IPL)
