We have love only for cricket as we are a bunch of lazy people. We will lift up that bloated Sachin Tendulkar or the most unfit Dravids, Kumbles and Laxmans. Forget about taking interest in any other games
Even Rediff has not posted anything special on CWY Games... I was looking for the medals tally for a long time. Now the author talking about the obession of Cricket.
Cricket is our religion and the only sport in which we can say Indians are world class, and after beating the aussies, the best in the world. India have have some chess and shooting champs, but these sports require ZERO physical effort. Cricket is the reason India holds its heads high in the sporting arena. Also, we are going to see full houses in all 7 odi's, whereas none in football/hockey because of substandard level of play. Cricket rocks and it'll continue to be Indias religion, and Sachin=God!
I liked the article. However, the writer seems to have missed the point as far as offering a solution is concerned. Suggesting randomly players like PT Usha, Dhanraj is nothing less than a mega disaster, worst than what we have now. JFYI, Dhanraj is one of the selectors who solely decided to push Harendra Singh as India's coach over reputed European coaches. We dont want the same problems to be offered as new solutions. One way out is to put pressure on sports ministry and IOC to make the federations and IOA understand the gravity of the situation, plan the funding properly and then appoint professionals. I'm not sure if I would like to spend my penny on sportspersons to be in charge unless they have excellent record in similar background. Sportspersons are welcome for technical work, though not all of them have the calibre to select a team without strong prejudices. Sometimes, you feel that the lack of achievement is not the administrators fault solely, there is a serious lack of fire amongst our sportspersons too. There are hundreds of examples of athletes overcoming hurdles and problems in other countries. If this country can produce excellent doctors, educationists, scientists and entrepreneurs in the same conditions, why is that only sportspersons complain of red tapism and nepotism. Of course, this does not justify the poor administration and apathy of the people towards sports but then it's the same for almost every field.
it will be helpful if more infrastructure well maintained and more people will participate in sports.if one indian reaches somewhat near international levels we start expecting too much from that sportsman.we need quite a few of us in that level to make some mark.instead of being passive commentators thwere could be more peolpe participating in sports will make a great help.
