Chess News a bit slow - 6th round also over
by Antistupidity on Mar 22, 2008 01:08 AM  | Hide replies

Actually as I write now the 6th round is also over and Anand defeated Karjakin in Blind and drew with him in Rapid. So in the process he has cut down Aronian's lead over him to half a point.

Currently he is 6th in Blind on 3 points and 2nd in Rapid on 4 points for a combined score of 7 which puts him 2nd overall behind Aronian who is on 7.5

There still are 6 more rounds to go....

The games are as usual very fast and interesting and can be viewed live on the official website for those of you who are interested (name of site is amberchess2008)

The two players are provided with a monitor facing each other.

Consider a simple Ruy Lopez Scenario

e4-e5, Nf3-Nc6, Bb5-a6

Say when white plays Bb5 only the previous move of black say Nc6 appears on the screen with e4-e5 getting masked out.

when black plays a6, he can see only Bb5 - the previous move of white.

The idea of this stuff is, if GM's start with standard opening lines the complications occur only during the middle-games. Normally a GM dont try for a new Novelty in an opening sequence especially during blindgames but there is load of possiblity to work on some rare openings like Larsen Attack or Grobbs defence etal to gain foothold.

Karpov was an expert in blind games he won the first amber if my memory serves right.

If a player makes an illegal move, the monitor will display the message - Illegal move or something like that and there is always an arbiter available for manual intervention.

Unlike normal chess players aint allowed to record their moves in blindfold

thanks that vijay...

but i'm still not 100% clear... for example:- does this mean that the player has to memorise the previous moves made by the opponent?

Vijay, I am surprised you could not give a simple, understandable answer to the question.

In a blind-fold game, the blind-fold(ed) player plays without the sight of position on the board. The oponent's last move is conveyed to the blind-fold player (orally or through a computer monitor) and the blind-fold player has to visualize the position and respond with his/her own move. Blind-fold play is here since the time of Philidor, before even Babbage.

Only recently, it has come into its own in serious tournament play (like in Amber..). Computers are just the logistical part.

The Indian crowd is after cricket
by Rajgopal Menath on Mar 21, 2008 11:56 PM

It is very clear Indian crowds, now helped by politicians, mostly have distorted minds when it comes to blindly supporting cricket. So much so, even to the near-exclusion of other sports! This shows the true Indian mindset and explains our poor showing in all sports including in cricket! Money spent in cricket should hence be spent on education - only then balanced minds will be created to appreciate great games like chess, hockey, athletics, archery, golf, billiards, etc.

Whatever this "Shit Nation Succumbed To A Shit Mania Called Cricket" might say; to us, only you are the REAL CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS WHO HAS KEPT THE INDIAN FLAG FLYING HIGH IN THE WORLD OF INTERNATIONAL SPORT. No wonder then that a column which overflows in response to a shit caled Cricket is empty when it comes to other sports in India even though it is winning news.
