Question on Fedex's ability!!!! ridiculous
by suresh ganapathy on Jun 21, 2008 01:39 PM

Well going by Borg's accuracy of predictions (who predicted that Fed will win French or rather give a very tough fight to Nadal) i think i am happy that Fedex will win!!!!.. Yawn another article, comments etc.. i cant imagine ppl questioning the greatness and ablity of a guy who is the greatest ever to play this sport...Wonder how ppl are hailing Nadal who hasnt done anything apart from winning clay court titles in his life.. pls go and chk statistic bfore everyone utters gibberish abt Nadal's achievements.. 90% tiotles have come on Clay...The media, journalists etc are all vultures.. ready to pounce on a guy who despite having the dreaded "mono" reched semis of aus open and final of french open and that is termed as "Fed in decline"..Wonder if there is anyone who had reached 16 consecutive semis and dominated the field like fed has...He is a champion and he will show that this wimbledon...

Both Nadal and Federer are greats
by Arun Prasad on Jun 19, 2008 10:58 AM

Everyone here is saying that Nadal only knows to play well in Clay court. but, apart from winning 4 French open (clay court). He also managed to enter the finals of Wimbeldon (grass court) twice, semifinal of Australian open(hard court), he was Quater finals of US open(hard court) twice. So, Federer is greatest player no doubt about that but Nadal is also trying to match him.

There is no argument about greatness of Federer. He has already achieved so much that he will always be referred to as one of all time greats. So is Nadal. He is unlucky to have been born in Federer era, otherwise he could have dominated the scene for a long time, but luckily for him, he is also younger than Federer, and can wait for his time.
The keen watchers of the game (those without any bias) will agree that presently, Nadal is playing better than ever before, and looks a better bet than Federer. Federer I am told caught some bug, from which, he is yet to recover fully, apart from the bug, he is not getting younger, and at some point, he has to relinquish his throne. Considering all this, I say that Nadal's time has come. He is looking that much more sexy to me.
For information of Mr. Ravindra, I have played and still play Tennis.

Ha Ha....
The Rediff Discussion Board is the biggest joke in the entire internet community. Just think of this - Those people who have never played Tennis in their life (leave alone playing, they have not even had a grip of a tennis racquet), make so many expert comments; and are quarrelling over the superiority of all the Tennis Greats. Grow up ppl, grow up. Learn to appreciate each and every Tennis Great(or for that matter regarding any sport, as i've seen similar situation in any article related to cricket, football, etc.). I too haven't held a tennis racquet in my life, but i enjoy the games of each of these stalwarts. So, just enjoy their game, and stop quarrelling over such issues in each and every discussion board. There are many more things to discuss about.

After saying this, you still want to be a part of this community? Grow up dude, people don't need to even see a Tennis racquet to express their opinion. They just need an internet connection.

Mr.Ravindra: You appear to be a genius. I never thought one should have played a game to have an opinion about it. Regular followers of the game have an idea about the game and the abilities of the performers and they certainly can have an opinion about it. There is nothing wrong about it and rediff providing a platform to voice such opinions is to be appreciated, though your comment does not warrant any appreciation but only condemnation for its naivete. Yes, there are many important issues to comment and discuss about and people regularly do this on Rediff discussion board. Perhaps it is a new experience for you!

yes, let's see if Federer is able to win Wimbledon this year though it seems that both Nadal and Djokovic could pose strong challenges to him. Novak beat him at the Australian Open and Rafael at the French. Wimbledon could be his comeback or his demise as the no.1.

Has anybody ever asked where does Nadal go or what does he do once the clay season finishes??? Roger Federer at his worst slump has managed to reach all the finals of major slams. No player, not even Sampras could achieve that. Also 3 French Open finals and a semi in row prove what a great player Roger Federer is! He is just unlucky to be playing along with one of the greatest clay courters of all time...

Well said Ajay Singh. This is the point everybody is missing about Roger Federer. He is in one of his worst slumps and still he reaches the semis of Australian Open, finals of Monte Carlo, Hamburg and French Open on his least favourite surface, Clay, but still people question about Roger's greatness. The best showing of Sampras at French Open is a single Semis appearance, but no one questions his greatness! Roger has reached the French Open finals thice and Semis once, has 12 grand slam titles, has reached 11 of the last 12 grand slam finals, and still they question his ability. Is it not a funny world? Well Federer appears to have created his own monster because of his greatness and finds it difficult to shake it off!

inspite of so many other great players playing prime tennis during Sampras era, still he could win 14 big titles!i guess Sampras is better than federer. I truly believe men tennis has lost its charm as there no surprises in results!

If you can recall just Sampras and Federer, it is very likely that you are so young that you may not even know of Rod Laver who won all four grand slams in a calendar year not once but twice - in 1962 and again in 1969. None of these recent players has even one French Open to his name. Rod Laver turned professional and so could not play the grand slams from 1963 to 1968, otherwise one may speculate about how many grand slams he might have ended up winning. No current player ought to even be considered as the 'greatest' till he is able to hold all four titles at the same time let alone doing it twice in his career!!

EXACTLY - if one agrees that players from different eras cannot be compared then there is no way to call anyone the 'greatest'; one can only say that so and so dominated his own era and that's that. The only way to compare players across eras is to see whether they were versatile enough to win on both grass/hardcourt as well as on clay. So, till Fedex wins a French Open - and it is little wonder that he has been trying so hard for the last three years - one cannot even think of him as the 'greatest'. Sampras, of course, never won the French and Federer's game is considered more complete than Sampras's; no doubt that Sampras was a great player but the 'greatest' - naaah, not by a long shot. Even his seven titles at Wimbledon might very well be equalled or surpassed by Federer.

Apart from Agassi, none of the above belong to the truly great category. Agassi-Sampras was like Rafa-Federer. There is not much differnce in competition between the current era and 90's. Federer is obviously even better player than Sampras.

Yes, Australian cricket team is also very "lucky" to win three world cup since they face no competition.
Team India in 1983 was the all time best (in cricket's history) since it defeated mighty West Indies.

Why not question Federer?
by Vivek Singh on Jun 18, 2008 03:24 PM  | Hide replies

Dear Deepti Patwardhan

I don't understand your problem! A guy played well, dominated the circuit with hard work and near perfect game - he, Nadal, deserves to be a worthy challenger. Just because it's Federer, and he happened to win so many titles in the past years, this challenge is not so "nice" and Federer should be offered honorary Wimbledon title. It's the worst I've read in Tennis rivalries, and more so from Federer fans. No Sampras or Nadal fan, that I've read of on many blogs, has discounted Federer's skills. They've just said Sampras or Nadal were mutch more exciting to watch and really played a passionate game. The term favourite "whip boy" of Federer that you give to Roddick is SO MEAN! Do you know how close their games are? Let's leave it there. As for Nadal, Nadal is going to be an eventual world No.1 and might be the best ever, but it doesn't mean Federer was useless. Times change, and a new leader takes the stage. May this sense prevail on you, to understand what competition and victories are all about.

Agree with you...

But we must only say that Federer is on the "wane" or Nadal is on Top if Federer ends the year without a grand slam and Nadal wins another one, on a different surface.

There are 3 more to go and as the author says we are in the Federer time of ATP year.

exactly.. nadal has proved himself over all types of surfaces and he deserves to be the no.2 overall and one day even no.1.. he is not like thomas muster who became no.1 just by clay.. by winning queens defeating karlovic roddick and djokovic just after winning the french openhe enters wimbledon as a favorite full of confidence and not as just another challenger.. i am a nig federer fan and wha he has done over the last 4 years is amazing but this year is what counts and whether he will be able to secure his no.1 ranking in face of somestiff competition will be his ultimate test.. as for roddick being his whipping boy, it is just that roddick's game fits federer's like a glove and as long as he is not able to add a bit more of a variety he will remain as so..
