Great teams rewarded only in past
by Abhijit on Jun 14, 2008 12:25 PM  | Hide replies

Teams that perform good in initial stages tend to loose the tournament.

Attack is the best defence. But tight defence always was rewarded. Italy's defence was the main reason for their title in Last World cup.

Look at Argentina. They always attack from the word go. But loss if they had to win. Everyone hail them as tournament favourite in league stage, but they fail against tight defence.

This Dutch team too seems to have same fate. Dont judge by league game. Knockout stages are for those teams which defend well. Both Italy and France forget to play defensive football if the opponent attacks regularly. May we like that but the result is what matters.

So dont expect a lot from Dutch and Spain. Loosers in major tournaments so far.

Cmon man just hail the great achievement of this great dutch team.Enjoy the great footbal being played by this awesoem team then telling that they will lose in the knockout stage and all that. One can argue on anything even though the arguement is useless.scoring seven goals in 2 matches and that too against the 2 last world champions is not a small thing. And you say not to expect anythign from Spain and The Dutch team....then who will win then...Romania,Poland or Austria?Did the need to score 20 matches or you to believe that they wont suffer in the later stages.I sincerely find your views just out of the book and hopeless. You dont become a football experst by just wring anything ...See the results mate....Its gonna be spain vs holland in the finals

You are right. Even if you don't have a decent performing forward, you can still perform miracles. Example is France in 1998. They didn't have a single good forward. Henry and
Trezeguet were too young and inexperienced and the others were either ineffective or injured. Still they won, thanks to their solid defence and playmakers. Repeat 2006, where again France and Italy had the most solid defence.

Can we call it a true French team ?
by Chatt on Jun 14, 2008 11:58 AM  | Hide replies

The problem with France is, they always have players who are either picked up from their African colonies or whose roots are from the colonies of West Africa or Algeria.... whereas the teams like Italy or Spain are more indegenious.... The very appearance of France team make me sick ...doesnt look like an European team..... looks more like an African team ....
Its so pathetic in the country which has given the all time greats like "Platini"

Don't be a racist. I assume that you are an Indian. Our inherent racist tendency gives preference to the fair skinned. All dark skinned people are immediately marked as second best even in our own country. Just see what happened to the black cheerleaders in IPL. Somebody thinking like you had put them out of action. Great message from the land of the Mahatma!

What is sickening about having non whites in an European team? The French team jersey is awarded on merit, not on skin colour. It is the 'sickening team' that won the World Cup in 1998 and reached the finals in 2006. And where were the all white teams, your favourites Italy and Spain then? Italy won the tournament in 2006 thanks to their deception against Australia in the Quarter-finals.

Your warped thinking has forgotten Brazil, and the all time great, Pele. By your definition, is Brazil a 'sickening team'?

Since you seem to have a bias against the black skinned, you shouldn't have any grievance when Asians are ill-treated by the Westerners. Perhaps you will realize this when you are at the receiving end of racism.

People like you are sickening. Living in the 18th Century doesn't help. Open your eyes and you will realize that you are in 21st century.

Dear frd
I didnt mean tht .... wht I meant o say is the French team not an indegeniousteam ..its full of hired players from their Colonies ....
u have understood me wrongly .... having stayed in Europe i knw how these colonial people are ill treated in these european countries, but they dont hesitate to lure them for their own interest ... be it for their soccer team or for their front line soldiers ....

Pele and Brasil is a different story...Brasil is a multi coloured country ...it is a melting pot and there the dark & tanned population is more than white ....
i had a Brasilian frd who was denied entry in a elite club in germany as he was tanned .... but the same Germany wud not hesitate to take him in their football team for winning ....
U shud visit the black colonies in Paris and see the plight of these people....
The Algerians in France and the Turks in germany are often branded as Terrorists ....

u have totally misundderstood me

Strong Contenders for EuroCup 2008
by Chatt on Jun 14, 2008 11:27 AM

With the pathetic performance of Italy and France, I feel Spain and Holland are two strong contenders for the title. I personally would like to bet for Spain. Its an amazing team, the country is so divided, with every cornor wants to be separated but when they put on the jersey they look so united....
Its marvellous to watch the Spaniards(Real Madrid, Valencia) and the Catalans (Barcelona) ... putting aside all their differences and playing together ....

French rout
by kskumar on Jun 14, 2008 10:20 AM

What a rout! But then France seems to be relying on the same aging legs that got them to the finals of the FIFA Cup in 2006. At 35 and 34 clearly Claude Makelele and Patrick Viera are past their prime. I do not know if Lilian Thuram is still playing. If he is, he will be 36, ripe old age for footballers. No wonder France was routed.

With the Dutch in such a sparkling form, they seem to be on course for the finals.

Hope France beats Italy and qualifies for the quarter-final. French have got good players from Henry, Ribeiry, Benzema, Malouda, Anelka etc.

The Dutch have always been underachievers in Soccer. They should have won the World Cups in 1974 and again in 1978, but somehow managed to choke. They have always had very good players but could never function as a team. The present team lacks big names, but moves like an unstoppable tide. They have got all it takes to be a champion team. They look a sexy lot, and should at least go up to Final, like they did in 1974 and 1978. Let us wish them well.

How old are you, ash?
I know the question is derogatory, but the way you discuss events of 1974, to me at least it seems that you were an adult woman in 1974.
That makes you an old woman today, and this is contradicting the image I had of you.

my dear frd ...how do u forget the Dutch team winning Euro Cup in 1988 with Marco Van Basten scoring both the Goals....
That was the golden era of Dutch Football with Ruud Gulit, Basten & Rijkard trio used to rule the field ...the most deadly combination which any team could only dream of...So why do u always refer to 74 & 78 World Cup always ...
and moreover pls understand that Europeans consider Euro Cup even more prestigious than World Cup

you are right the trio of Gullitt, Rijkard, and Van Basten was as deadly as it could get, but do not forget the magic of that one man ... Johan Cruyff, the tall lanky one man legend with long flowing hair .... caressing, gliding and floating around the pitch spearheading the invent of "" TOTAL FOOTBALL "" - whatever might have followed, jee, that endearing image will remain alive in our mind for ever .. !!! that was glorious, magical, mesmerising soccer, well and truly !!!!!

I am sorry dear ...but i dont knw ur knowledge abt European soccer ...having stayed there for quite sometime I can say u tht so much is the rivalry between the nation tht Germany wud prefer losing to Brasil but not to the Dutch ...

Once they use to have street fights in the bordering citites ....
similar is the situation for Spain, Portugal and Italy, France& Germany , England & Scotland & Ireland...
And all of them rate Euro Cup as the most prestigious cup for them to win ...

Justifying the label to the Group I believe now France & Italy will battle it for a win in their match while hoping the Orange continue their form and trounce Romania.

Very interesting battles ahead. Hope to see something new in Romanian Football. All the best Romania. [THough I don't want either Itali or France go out cos they play beautiful football, but we always support & encourage the Weaker teams in hope of fierce competition]
