It could be one of the five listed below. Hard to choose between them, as they are all unquestinable legends.

1. Dhyan Chand(Hockey)
2. Viswanathan Anand(Chess)
3. Ramanathan Krishan(Tennis)
4. Milkha Singh(Altheletics)
5. Sachin Tendulkar(Cricket)

Dada has to win Padma Bhushan first, only then he is eligible for Padma Vibhushan. Sachin single handedly carried the team's burden while Dada's success should be dedicated to Sachin,Dravid,Kumble and Harbhajan's performance.

It is really a sad day for the entire nation that a person like Mr Pronab Mukherjee is equated with icons like Tendulkar or a Vishwanath Anand or Asha Bhonsle as a matter of fact. Pronab, the congressman has won his only election thru ballot for the Lok Sabha seat
with Left front support and almost all and sundry in W.Bengal are aware of it. As usual he has conceded to the leftists from his state whatever they have asked for whether it is by way of appointment or financial sanctions. I have ample proof of that. The country
will no doubt survive but the days are not far off that Priyadas Munshi will al;so be awarded a Bharat Ratna along with Sourab Ganguly

I fully agree. There was NO reason whatsoever to 'honour' Mr Mukherjee. He has done NOTHING worth it. Those DAmn politicians should not be given any 'honor' for that matter. Similarly it was sad day when Mr Rajiv Gandhi was bestowed with Bhaarat Ratna.

Sad Sad Sad....

kasparov never defeat fischer. so shall we call its kasparov's failure? no, if fischer leave the game, kasparov cant do anything. similarly, if kasparov leave the chess, then its not anand's fault.

and fyi, anand beat kasparov when anand was only 20 yr old. anand has beaten kasparov around 8-10 times.

and anand has offered kasparov for match.. this is called the spirit

FYI during the last few years before his retirement, Kasparov avoided playing anand for the title. What can Anand do if Kasparov would not play him. Anand has been the best player for many years now. He also plays aggressive and fast. He is considered to be the fastest player. And to add to all this, he has been a winner.. something which is a rarity among indian sportsmen.

By your logic, great players like Lara, Greg Chappel and Dennis Lille are useless because they too never won WC for their countries. In a team game like cricket, an individual no matter how great he is, cannot win the WC on his own, it needs team effort. Atleast 2-3 batsmen and 2 bowlers have to perform consistently over a period of time. Australia won 3 WCs in a row not because of one individual but because of the team effort. In every game you have different players playing a lead role, same cannot be said of other countries, they depend too much on one or two players.

The reasoning is not correct. Talent wise Anand may have upperhand, but the entertrainment which Sachin has provided not only to people in India but all over the world is I think goes in sachin's favour. Comparing status of both players all over the world I Think Fischer is undoubtedly better than Anand keeping Kasporov aside for the moment. similarly Sachin is next to Sir Don keeping one or two aside for the moment. On the overall basis both deserve Bharat Ratna speaking honestly. India should be proud of Both without being envy to anyone for the sake of other. Let's see who wins the race for Bharat Ratna.

when anand come to chess; chess had same position as we have football today in india. he revolutionalised chess in india single handedly. chess is played actively in around 150 nations.

its bcoz of anand only gr8s like sasikiran, harikrishna, humpy r dominating chess world and bringing medals for the nation in asian games.. today we have world champs in each age grp and in each category. no one cud ever think of it in india before anand.

today, chess is the only sports india can dominate and control the whole world.

also, anand is very humble and down to earth.. and not a money greedy person.. above all, he never get into any controversy.

hey attacker... we never ever have any arguement about Vishy deserving the award. But for that sake how can you say that Sachin doesnt deserve. As Ritwik said Tendulkar plays a team game. fyi, he got man of the series in two world cups because of his batting contribution. If still Team India hasn't won the cup, its a shame to the other 10 players in the team.

i said anand is better contender for bharat ratna and then i put his achievements which r far more than sachin. and one imp thing u r missing that anand has revolutionalised chess in india. whras if sachin was not thr cricket will have the same popularity in india. any1 on the top will b treated as sachin then. and as u r saying its bcoz of other 10 in the team india always lose.. then why media, public n govt give so much suppport n money to them.. and as per chess as an individual sports is concerned; its tougher to b in individual sports. and at the time of anand, chess was at the same pos as football today. also, chess is played actively in around 150 nations.. so its tough competition in chess

by attacker on Jan 25, 2008 11:22 PM  | Hide replies

anand is undoubtedly india's no 1 sportsperson ever. he has revolutionalised chess in india.

anand is 2 times world champ, 3 times world cup, 4 times world rapid champ, 4 times oscar winner.. and has won 100s of international titles, medals, and awards.

anand crossed 2800 rating.

anand is consistently on world top 3 for around last 2 decades!

he had been respected by indian awards like Padma Shri, Arjuna Award, Soviet Land Nehru Award, National Citizens Award, Shri Rajiv Gandhi Award Outstanding sports person, "Kala Praveena" Conferred Doctorate (Honoris Causa), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, K K Birla Award, British Chess Federation Book of the Year Award, Sportstar Millenium Award, Padma Bhushan etc.

bcoz of anand only gr8s like sasikiran, harikrishna, humpy r dominating chess world and bringing medals for the nation in asian games.. today we have world champs in each age grp and in each category. no one cud ever think of it in india before anand.

today, chess is the only sports india can dominate and control the whole world.

also, anand is very humble and down to earth.. and not a money greedy person.. above all, he never get into any controversy.

kudos to anand.

can anybody shed some light on the descending hierarchy of padma shri, bhushan, vibhushan awards?

Congratulations Anand and Sachin,
by VINOD DONIV on Jan 25, 2008 10:18 PM  | Hide replies

They truely deserved this honour. Today also they proved again to the world how talented they are where the "MASTERBLASTER" Sachin played a wonderful knock of 153 against Australia in the Adelaide Test, just few minutes ago Anand won a full point in the 11th round of Corus Chess Open against Magnus Carlsen, who has been the tournament leader so far. Anand is now the leader in Group A and having a great chance to win this tournament.

Keep Going guys. You are the greatest sport icons of India.
