Maradona - a footballing god and rightly so
by RK on Dec 06, 2008 05:01 PM

i just started reading the comments in this thread.
A few observations and inputs.
1)Maradona and Sachin - ask sachin and he w'd tell he grew up idolizing maradona and john mc enroe. maradona w'd never hav heard of sachin.
i first heard abt maradona in 1986 and whn he won the world cup and first saw him play in italia 90. nobody in argentina w'd hav heard abt sachin and im sure he wont hav a single fan in latin america other than some frm the indian community.

2)cricket and football

crickets is just a colonial game whr the world has no interest, tahe south asia out of the equation and cricket w'd hav even less followers than chess.

someone here was saying that crickets a more intelligent, more technical and better to watch than football. thats simply absurd again
after a match spanning 8 hours, tv channels here spend 2 hours of analysis of the game and using slow motions teach the public abt the technicalities. since all of us hav seen that we think that crickets more technical.
a technique in football is much more complex and it can only be taught in the training grounds not on screen. probably football is the most technical sport where in u use ur whole body to control the ball and arms to giv u balance. the vision u need to hav in football is phenomenal thats y zizou, maradona, platini breed of midfeilders are too less in a pool of more than a million professionals playing the game.

What a pity to waste 5000 security ppl's day or two to protect Maradona, than the security of the country. Well thats the irony of the country India, that there is always a misbalance of use of power for wrong causes.
Other important thing to goft kgs of Gold to Maradon, why? Did our great players ever get such an welcome anywhere else in world? Won;t it be better to use the money from such collection to the lesser known Victims of Mumbai blast?

May not be in football, but we do have/had in Cricket. Here intention was nto to compate the stature of players, but to emphasize on the imbalance of usage of power, and to compare the causes where money is needed and money is going.

It is much better than to protect Raj Thakre, Mullayam, Sonia, Amar Singh, Mayawati .... he is a genius and one of the gretest sports personalities this worl has ever produced ....India has never produced anybody of the stature of Maradona in any feild!

well then you are at mistake dear. Maradona does not come close to Gandhi anyhow.
The other thing, big names are created by popularising the ppl, where we indians are lacking, else there is no derth of talent in India.
still my point was to misuse the power by using 5000 security ppl for the security of Just one person Maradona, is it justifiable?

Baap,Aap to Mahagyani hai!Even Baichung Bhutia, the face of Indian football has doubted whether football in India will progress afetr Maradona's visit. As for fellow Bongs, lets be practical and go for employment generation rather than play in the hands of politicians who invite Maradona to tickle with the sentimentaal Bongs, for votes.there are countless Maradonas in India who wither away due to lack of patronage and training.

Americans?
Dude, football is world's game, the world cup is watched more than any other event, even the olympics..
America is also a dud in football and is improving.
Perhaps you are stuck to the stupid cricket, a colonial game, in which Indian mostly loses, the betting, satta and other things occur, with underworld hands in it, indirectly funding terrorism.
Cricket is one of the reason for India's poor performance in other games. See, we got a medal after so many years in Olympics.
Come out of your shell...

To malign all of Bengal due to commies is in bad taste.
With your logic, one can state that all marathis are bad because you support politicians like deshmukh and thackeray. But that is not true is it?
Please stick to the issue and do not generalise.

@Triumph: Have you ever come to the city to work or as a tourist? I don't believe you have. You are speaking with shades on your eyes. A very closed mind.
The city has its quirks, just like any other city in the country. Some like its quirks, some don't. For example, i enjoy being in Delhi, but hate Mumbai. I feel more comfortable working with Delhi-ites because i feel they are better human beings. Mumbai is a place where friendships are forged only for personal gains. No true friendships, mere acquaintances. In that respect, Nagpur is far better, cause people out there are true Marathis, who welcome you with open arms.
Just cause this is my opinion, does not mean that Mumbai is bad or Delhi is a better city.
I hope i have been able to communicate my thoughts to you.

It is not because of the Kolkata people being lethargic and not being able to protect themselves. It is not because Kolkata has port. It is because of this attitude of fighting among ourselves, dividing based on states, languages and culture that the British were able to conquer us.
