china sports:a comment from a Chinese
by songshi on Aug 22, 2008 06:38 PM  | Hide replies

Dear friends,

I am a Chinese now visiting India.I happened to see this page and find some comments on the alleged underage of Chinese women gymnasts. I'd like to offer some comment about Chinese sports too.

I am a liberalist and an advocate of China's democratization, but I think it is a bit simple to evaluate Chinese sports merely from the nature of Chinese government.Absolutely,Chinese government does hope to see Chinese atheletes perform so well on international sports arena and has done a lot to promote the training system which includes thousands of officially-financed sport schools absorbing sports talents from children of varying ages. It is understandable that China's sports success has its positive domestic implications for the Chinese government. It advances its political legitimacy by making Chinese feel that it is this government that can bring huge national pride to them. Many Indians talk about China’s “communist” regime. Acturally, it is not so accurate to call it “communist”. Yes, China is today ruled by the communist party. However, this party has changed a lot and now is greatly different from the communists in former Soviet Union, and those in Cuba and North Korea today. Philosophy of collectivism and planned economy has been discarded long. In my eyes, its ideology is now a mixture of economic liberalism and political authoritarianism. Some even call it a “communist” party with a capitalist heart. On the other hand, economic liberalization and openin

Sorry, continue as follows:

makes Marx-Leninism increasingly unattractive among Chinese population. As a result, the Chinese government finds it is increasingly difficult to use orthodoxical communism to support its domestic legitimacy.Therfore, nationalism or patriotism become a more powerful political tool and sports glory is part of it.

However, this does not mean Chinese sports are fully officially motivated, and that Chinese atheletes are all product of forced selecting and training. It is absurd to assume that the sports machine in China grab forcibly talented children from their parents and throw them into the spports “concentration camps”.Acturally, almost all students at the sports schools come here primarily based on their or their parents’ wills.it may be more correct to say that many children are “forced” by their parents but not by the officials(just like that a child is “forced” by parents to learn medicine but not painting). Sports is now a huge industry in China which can offer you money and fame, so many parents or children think it is not a bad prefession. On many occasions, sport schools have more applicants than they can admit.Besides training, they offer education of varying levels too. Sport school is especially attractive to two kinds of parents: one is those who think their children’s academic learning ability is not so well as their sports talent, the other is those in poverty who think choosing sports is one of the best ways to change family co

conditions. Many or even most of China’s champions in such “hard” events like weightlifting, judo and wrestling are from poor or rural families. In contrast, gymnastics is a event popular to China’s urban families who think it is elegant and good to bodyshape.Of course, not everyone can become Olympic medalists and then get rich rewards. However, China sports contests are a multi-level system which offers not equal but many chances. Titles of national champion, provincial champion and even county champion can reward you some or a lot.For some events, if you are not so hopeful to be selected by the national or provincial teams, you may be admitted without test by colleges or universities who pursue their positions in college-level sports competitions.Yes, most students from sports schools can not climb up to the top or even middle of the pyramid and many of them do not live so well as they expect, but this does not mean that they will be better if they do not choose sports and sports itself is truly a field of “risk investment”. However, I do think China should do more to overcome this “risk”, and I hope that prominent atheletes in China can donate money and set up a nationwide fund to help those in worst conditions.

So in general, Chinese sports is a mixture of official political considerations at the top and individual and family motivations at the bottom with commercialization. And official investment linking the two.

Now,let’s turn to the topic

of underaged gymnasts. It may be true? If they are really underage , it is truly a mistake of not complying with the required standard. But one of my friends who had practiced gymnastics told me that underage has no so much to do with performance and older girls have advantages too. Younger girls may have smaller weight and this may be good, older girls may have stronger legs and so may do better in vault actions. From psychological point, they may have more self-controlling ability. In spite of this , I can say nothing but that each team should observe the agreed age standard.

IOC: No proof China cheated in gymnastics
‘There’s no question ... on eligibility,’ group’s spokeswoman says.

--------------thie comes from NBC news.

it seems that Chinese will get more than 50 golds.

how about us? 1 gold 2 bronz? that's all? i don't think we have any time to talk about others' problem. we should think more about our problem in sports.

and I was informed that 4 chinese boxers enter the simi-finals which means they will get at least 4 more medals soon.

GOLD MEDAL AT THE AGE OF 14...
by Jack Sparrow on Aug 22, 2008 12:57 PM  | Hide replies

IS'NT THAT AN ACHIEVEMENT THAT NEEDS TO BE APPLAUDED..?

WE INDIANS HAVING THE MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE 'HUMAN POPULATION' HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SEND MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE TO ANY OLYMPICS SO FAR..

CAN ANY SCHOOL, PARENT OR FRIENDS IN INDIA DREAM OF SENDING A CHILD AGED 16 TO OLYMPICS..?
ARE WE MENTALLY TRAINING OUR FUTURE GENERATION FOR BEING COMPETITIVE IN SPORTS..?

AS CHILDREN, WE ARE ALWAYS ASKED TO STUDY AND MAKE OUR FUTURE SECURE IN BY SECURING A JOB IN OFFICE AND DO PAPER WORK..

ANCIENT INDIA GAVE MORE PREFERENCE TO HEALTH AND PHYSICAL WORK, PLAY AND ACTIVITIES. BUT URBAN LIFESTYLE TODAY DO NOT GIVE US THAT OPPORTUNITY..

WE MUST MAKE OUR KIDS TO MASTER SOME SPORT ALONG WITH THE USUAL SCHOOL STUDIES SO THAT THEY CONQUER ALL FACES OF LIFE AND BE PROUD OF BEING AN HEALTHY INDIAN..

IF INDIA ALSO DOES LIKE THIS IT IS POSSIBLE

Like Talibans of Afgan crully killed all other religions followers , china is also shooting and brutally killing non-believers of china power hungry communist theories.

1.like Talibans -- there is no religious freeom in Chins (we saw Tibet)
2.Like Talibans -- in China there is no freedom for press
4.Like Talibans -- China also does not like democracy.
5.Like Iraq -- china occupied Kasmir and Tibet
6. Like Talibans and ISI ( terrorts and terrorism is promoted in other countries , e.g. al quida, lashkar , bin laden agents) - china also encourages its communist agents in other countries like India and Nepal.
7.Like in Taliban ruling -- in china there is a serious human rights violation

KEEPING ALL THESE THINGS IN MIND , WHY THE MOST DANGEROUS COUNTRY CHINA SHOULD NOT BE DISCONNECTED FROM INTERNATIONAL MATTERS.

TO GET PROTECTION FROM CHINA EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD SHOULD HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS

THE ONLY UNHAPPY BEINGS IN CHINA ARE MUSLIMS..
THE CHINESE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED COMMUNISM INTO THEIR LIFESTYLE AND HAS GROWN INTO A SUCCESSFUL COUNTRY.

WHILE TALIBAN/AFGHANISTAN/PAKISTAN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE SADISTIC LOT WHO DO NOT LIKE OTHER CASTE, CULTURE PEOPLE TO BE HAPPIER THAN THEM..

WHEN A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE DECIDE THEIR WAY OF LIFE, OTHERS SHOULD NOT INTERFERE AS LONG AS IT CREATES PROBLEM FOR HEALTHY SURVIVAL OF OTHERS..

SO, DONT COMPARE ISLAMIC TERRORISTS WITH CHINA..

We should have sent Mallika Sherawat to do the gymnastics. She does quite a lot on and off screen, and would have floored the judges and got a bronze. What do you say ??? Or should it have been Bipasha Basu ?

China has been following dictatorship like policy in whatever they do... same is the case of sports. they take away young kids away from family and train them only in sports to make them athletes and are not even given formal education. this has led to lot of Gold medals in this Olympics but what about the athletes who have failed qualify? they will live there life as failed athlete without any other means of surviving...
