You hit the bulls eye with that answer :-)
But yeah, one cannot compete in this era of extreme sports (even if they are highly motivated and talented) without sufficient technological and financial support. One can hit the bulls eye but they still need to buy the dart board and the darts...
But I would state one exception to this argument of mine. Cristy Coventry from Zimbabwe. For those who don't know her, she won one gold and 3 silvers this olympics and with a little bit of luck she should have won all four golds. That coming from a third world and malnutrished country like Zimbabwe and in a sport that depends so much on infrastructure and training is really incredible. To me she has accomplished much more than Phelps.

I think the problem is not only the fact that most of the people live their days to earn both ends meals but i think of late there is significant money coming to middle class families also to pursue sports a career.. well for me these can be the reasons, 1. Overall poor ecomnomy, no doubt about this 2. Lack of implementation of plannings in building sports infrastructure at Govternment level 3. Detructive Politics amongst different groups, lack of one nation spirit amongst the officials and then in the athletes 4. Lack of sports facilities at school level which should encourage students to know a sport and love it and then may be take decision to follow it in career 5. Poor financial suppport by Government for atleast national level sportmen. This definitely discourages to follow sports and rather compels people to do a trivial job to feed his her family. 6. Poor advertisement by Govt and sports sponsors about possible rewards. There has to be specific defined rewards in term of cash for attaining certain level otherwise it is hard to motivate just for the sake of uphailing country's name.

Because every one wants to be Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni (only cricketer) but ....not Phelps. Who wants to be Paes and Bhupati or Sania ? No one....

Everyone wants to be only cricketer because they see that can fetch them money so that they wont have to worry about future. The moment money comes into this sports we will also see some champoins come out.
Atleast we can do for a start is acknowledging this heroes. Then only then they may get some money from the corporates for endorsing which can help them for their training. Afterall corporates also means money, they will spent it on players who Indians worships

m p, what makes u think india cant produce?? maybe they are already there but they are not getting exposure. Maybe they dont have money to get enrolled into swimming clubs to start practising, or maybe they are pursuing other careers cos they dont think they cant earn enough in a swimming career in india,to support their parents and themselves.

Bindra's gold: Rs 10 crore spent on training How many people in India can spend on sport. Graduates in our country has only 1 dream after graduation, that is the earn money. They are doing right as they need to support the family.

Absolutely not necessary to put Sachin in this topic since he belongs to a sport which is not considered in Olympics.
