Cricket is there

We Indians love just Cricket. No worries on Olympic medals. As long as Shehwag, Dhoni, Sachin,.....score the big runs and make the crores of rupees for themselves, we are happy!!!!, thats all we want :).

Lets take up a Sport and start training kids at different Sports...
by Souvik Jana on Aug 19, 2008 07:36 AM  | Hide replies

I think if many people in India start playing some games and practice hard along with doing the regular things that we do, then most of them can become really good at the sports and can qualify for the Olympics... e.g. I am 25 and working in Software Company... but I get good times in weekends when I spent the day at home or with friends.... I always wanted to play Archery... Now I am thinking if I start playing now and play regularly... I can become really good in 2-3 years.... And I can try at National Level to qualify for Olympics then.... Also if we every child start getting proper training everyday for say only 2 hrs a day... I think we will have good people in future to qualify for the Olympics.... What say???

India in Olympics
by soumit deb on Aug 19, 2008 07:29 AM

We can never improve other sports unless and until we stop putting cricket as our priority, what's the point of cricket , do u feel that if cricket is included in London games , india will be able to get a medal,i honestly doubt ??

Look at China, the result of more then 3-5 years of hardcore effort and investment by the government behind programmes for developing different sports and sportsmen. Sports like Fencing also fetched them gold.

India can have 10 medals as projected by Mr.Bindra by 2012 provided if we start putting behind our effort now rather then waiting. We should start appointing experts from abroad, invest more on SAI, start getting sponsorshipsfor other deciplines, improve infrastructure - SAI,if not this is gonna be the same story of Indian team and olympians for upcoming next 10 games.

Results will come but in packets (like Abhinav ), its time that world's biggest democracy and second most populated country start thinking about its athletes and sports environment.

Otherwise we will be far behind in the line as we are rite now behind Mongolia, Azerbaijan and kenya.....................

Why is it that a single American has more Olympic Golds than all the athletes who have ever represented India combined, in its entire Olympic history ?

:-) It is hard work, passion , Respect to others talent and lots and lots of hard
work practice.

It does not matter if india has 100 or 200 / 1000 mil ppl , the point is how many of us train to that level of quality matching to the world of sports today ?

Also one blessing to Europeans and Americans is their body structure, natural strength and Weather conditions.

Well done Akhil
by deepak on Aug 19, 2008 06:02 AM  | Hide replies

Akhil is gracious even in defeat...great attitude..pass it on to the next generations...India should start preparing for boxing medals in London, right away. Olympic boxing suits Indians perfectly. Its for the nimble footed and about scoring in hits. Its not about knocking the other guy out in killer instinct aggression. Develop Boxing !

That is the fault of the Sports system in India... They get no Sponsors... But at the individual level I am all praise for all the 3 Boxers, Saina Nehwal from Badminton and obviously Abhinav Bindra from Shooting.... They have come up to this level inspite no major financial sponsorship and they have opened doors for People to do better in other sports except Cricket... It is for the Sports Authorities and People of India to take the initiative and change the Sports System...

what it takes to win medals at olympics.
by A Ara on Aug 19, 2008 05:41 AM

Guys let us face it. We Indians cannot stand our colleague's or neighbou's sucess.
example: monika was not allowed the flight to beijing. the timing of the release of drug test results is a small example of respect for merit in the country.

once this issue can be rectified and bring some respect, discipline & professionalism into the respective game, we cannot dream of medals at olympics/world championships.

There are numerous examples like that of Monika in Indian sport.

We do have the necessary skill/talent, but somewhere in the making/managing of champions/winners, we are messing .

We can help
by abc on Aug 19, 2008 05:16 AM  | Hide replies

There is something we can all do for India and Indian performance in Olympics
Let's adopt a sport other than Cricket. I'm not asking you to quit watching cricket but at least watch one another sport with the same enthusiasm. All you have to do is to watch when that sport is on the TV or in your town..It will take time but we will learn to respect other sports..
