Hi,
you can eat beef (you could b doing that even now)and try to win a medal with just that...

People from many muslim countries would be eating beef but do they win medals in all these games?? think man.

its about arduous practice / effort, nothing else.

he eats beef or HAM it is his personal beleif and habits nothing to do with others. Even he can be a vegetarian.

people who cry about cow slaughter easily fits in a country where pork and beef is flowing freely for few dollars more

Nothing personal otherwise.

As an American of non-Indian descent, I have to say a couple of things...first, we are all VERY proud of the entire US men's gymnastics team, especially Raj who caught many people's interest with his incredible team spirit (not to mention his incredible good looks!) Second: many people train on a diet without beef or pork, and third: most Indians here that I know and have worked with do not change their names to assimilate (my husband works in software, I am a Chartered Accountant, so we have worked with many Indians)

I find it interesting that race and national pride are so hotly debated here. In our home we have been celebrating all the athletes, and marvelling at the incredible skill, talent and training it takes for every athlete, not matter where they are from, to be able to compete with the very best in their sport.

Dear Rediff,
Glorify American citizens as Americans. Don't link them to India or whatever their roots are! We are not desperate for heroes. For a 60 year old country of more than 1 billion, we are unmatchable. We are the BEST. SAARE JAHAAN SE ACHCHA HINDUSTAN HAMARA!!!!!

raj is definitely a person of indian origin (pio) staying in usa and he has done our community proud.

if v can appreciate good work of other foreigners like say, ande agassi, kevin peterson, and many others having huge fans in ind, why not greet in the same zeal, the success of our indian origin sportsman?

dear friend, thats what i have said. Raj did a commendable job...but for USA, not for India. I agree with the 3rd grade infra here, but P T Usha still shone. Mr Bindra is a Millionaire and has his own private shooting club. But didnt dehati Dhyan CHand and P T Usha succeed. These are indians, we indians, should be proud of. Raj will get his due from the country he represents. Why should India bother? to us he is like any Tom Dick and Harry from any foreign country.

India should be ashamed!!!
by Sekar Nathan on Aug 12, 2008 05:04 PM  | Hide replies

India as a country and the sports authorities and people in such positions should feel ASHAMED WHEN EVER SUCH THINGS HAPPEN.

If few few talented Indians are able to make a mark in a foreign country, how many more of such talents are getting rusted in India. It is a shame that we are not able to provide the necessary infrastructure for identifying and coaching these talents in INDIA.

HEY MEDIA, DO NOT BRAG SUCH ACHIEVEMENTS AND HARP THAT INDIA IS PROUD OF SUCH PEOPLE, INSTEAD USE THESE AS OPPORTUNITIES TO HIGHLIGHT THE LACK OF SYSTEMS AND INFRA IN INDIA AND CREATE PRESSURE ON THE ROTTEN POLITICIANS AND LAZY AUTHORITIES TO ACT.

I agree with you till the time u say media shud highlight the lack of infra and poor facilities.

But when u say abt politicians, i beg to differ. politicians are not gonna do anything. IOA is private body like BCCI. Not say of govt. Just takes funds and enjoys. BCCI is rich becoz media has managed cricket well.
IOA is rich corrupt. Jitna mila utna kha liya.
So we can start a parallel body like ICL did for cricket. It wud challenge the IOA

Nobody had ever any doubt on any Indian's skill or potential in any field. In fact, it has been accepted worldwide. But yes, when the same Indian lives in India everything changes for him/ her. Indian's patriotism, attitude, competition level, health, stamina, social mentality, passion everything remains 25 % less than everybody else in this world.

Olympic mirror shows our Politicians are Impotent Dogs
by red chillies on Aug 12, 2008 05:01 PM

OLYMPICS is a mirror shows our Politicians are Impotent Dogs.
Olympics is a benchmark of How responsible the Leadership is and how sensitive they are towards the civil society at large.
Here the Lampoons wretched lusty animals only allowed to become politician and their favourite hiding place is behind 'LIKE PEOPLE LIKE LEADER" excuse which is a farce and shameless stupid argument.
Politicians are themselves the most rotten problem of this Nation who only know to eat taxpayers money and loot the nation.
OLYMPICS show how the Democratic system in our country is looted by the Impotent people called Politicians of land.

Yes, we should appreciate by saying Indian origin athlete has won the Bronze medal. But, the problem is Indians are quick in making lot of noise (read as self praising or taking the quick credits for no real reason!).

No point in being proud of someone who is only Indian by origin. Raj has consciously decided to be a US citizen and his roots have no meaning to him anymore... Why do we Indians always find glory in the achievement of this kind of people who don't consider themselves Indians? They have their reasons... we have no reason to cling on to those who didn't cling onto us...If Raj was in India, there's a high probability that he wouldn't have become an Olympic medalist...so from his point, he did what was good for him. From our side, we should be proud of Abhinav Bindra and not talk about Raj at all...!!!

Don't over rate China and under rate India. Your country has great and tremendous potential. But the real problem is people are lazy, greedy and are not united for the National cause. To solve all these things India needs a super strong leadership. Perhaps better than Chinese, say a leader like Putin who can crack the whip of the erratic and lunatic Indians and make them to work. Then the country will rise, in most of the ranks including sports. And stop complaining about excessive population, corruption, illiteracy and whatnot.

You guys are misinformed, come to USA and see how Indians from all the states in India have tried to preserve the Indian culture and religions in USA. They gave thousands of $$$ to Indian Charities like Pratham - which provides educations to slum children in Cities and Ekal Vidyalay which provides education to children in Tribal areas of India. We are Indians at heart and we still have same feeling for India as you have. At the same time we all appreciate the opportunities provided to us in USA to make our life better. So don't be judgemental insaying thay people of Indian Origin do not care for India. Learn to appriciate someone's achievement.
