Seld Confident Generation
by Gobinder Sandhu on Aug 16, 2008 10:40 PM

I'll take this comment, only when sports (not cricket) is a happy career option for the young generation.
Abhinav is self made , congrats to him .India is only lucky to have him.

Not a true reflection
by Subhash Menon on Aug 12, 2008 02:53 PM

Kudos to Abhinav for fetching India a much needed gold medal at the Olympics. We as a nation is proud of you. However, I disagree with the headline that says" Bindra reflects a self confident generation". The statement is misleading in all aspects. First of all Bindra acheived it after his family backed him to the core. They could do it thanks to their business background and ability to garner resources. I feel the medal is proudly his and his family's. We are just feeling happy about it bcos we are Indians. This is the only time when we connect to our fellow citizens. Otherwise we prefer to turn our heads in the other direction. Look at the rural areas & towns - 80% of India lives there. Look at the youth there, they seem so talented but have no resources and basic infrastructure to support. They would look at someone from the city as a alien. why So ?? its bcos he finds it difficult to connect to urbanites. Half the Indian team (hockey - archery - football, etc)is filled with athletes from underdeveloped states such as jharkhand, meghalaya, manipur, etc. while we blissfully ignore these states, they are the ones who are true flag bearers of the nation. Abhinav - congrats again, I am sure that as a gold medal winner, you would be able to guide the administrators of our sports better.

Introspection - ban cricket and its telecast for 15 yrs
by Ram Sharma on Aug 12, 2008 02:49 PM  | Hide replies

It is great that Abhinav has given us the first individual gold in the history of Olympics and any gold after 28 yrs. Earlier we hv got gold in hockey for 8 times.

Here it is to b understood that he has got gold only due to his and his father's determination and not due to any sports authorities or govt efforts. His father had arranged air-conditioned laboratory for Abhinav, German coaches, training in Germany. WE SHOULD INTROSPECT THAT HAD ABHINAV BEEN FROM A POOR FAMILY, HE WOULD NOT HV GOT ANY MEDAL, bcz in India only cricketers get crores of rupees in advertisement, selling themselves to clubs and match fees. They get all the facilities. Players from other games r ill treated and they do not get any training or proper infrastructure for development. Moreover cricket is also a drain on our resources and time. World cricket is financed by us and it is a very time consuming game.

PROBABLY, IT WILL B BETTER TO BAN CRICKET FOR SAY 15 YRS OR SO, so that other games come into limelight, get developed and get all the required attention and facilities. At least direct telecast of cricketing matches can b banned. USA had long banned cricket for this reason only.

Abhinav Bindra should deserves 10 time more than any cricket player, he may b Sachin, Dhoni or whatever. Bcz winning in Olymipcs is much more difficult that winning against a few cricket playing countries of former British colonies.

You seem to be one of those stupid people who recommend putting something down so something else. A comment like "USA had long banned cricket for this reason only. " only shows your ignorance - since nothing is usually banned in a free place like US and certainly not cricket. People like Sachin have worked hard and consistently over the years and recognised as world beaters everywhere. abhinav has done great but he is still no sachin tendulkar. even Abhinav will never claim that 1

Why should we be proud him ? Indian system had very little contribution. Dad bought the best shooting range money can buy and got him trained with the best possible coaches.

Abhinav should be proud of what he has done - being a world champion . No one but him and his dad deserve credit and have the right to be proud of. We will have to wait till 2109 for another gold medal if we continue to have sports authority of India run sports in India.

Congrats Abhinav
by Girish Y on Aug 12, 2008 02:45 PM

This article reflects the true spirit of India and callous arttitude of the Government sports officials.. I think Indians should single handedly put the step forward with private partnerships. Government sports has repeatedly failed over and over in producing quality sports person. Its left to the Indian public to perform with the help of Private industry to get gold for India in near future.

You need approximately 3 crores to be self confident. Best of luck to everyone who wants to be `inspired' by Bindra. All credit to him. But, if you are depending on the a**h**le Kalmadi to help you get a medal, considering all your motivation and intent then, best of luck to you!!!
