India need to unite first
by bency gopalakrishnan on Aug 11, 2008 08:18 AM

Many people ask the question why India cannot win medals in Olymbics while our neibour China is collecting medals with ease..

Answer is simple...

China got a united nation & unique culture..
They are really investing in sports..

Although we call ourself Indians, we are still a divided country.
Differences like North/South,Statewise emotions,religion/caste,language etc preventing us from unite to work as a Indian.

Best example is some posts in rediff forums where some guys are talking about North/South etc..

1) First we need proper funding on sports infrastructure.(doesn't means Kalmadi funding/)

2) Find talents from childhood & train them irrespective of regional barriers.Give good scholarships & job oppertunities for sports persons so that more parents ready to send their children for sports.

3) Remove all politics from sports.

no dude,

I think china is ahead of India in almost all aspects. But India is the strongest competitor to china as far as economy etc. go. as far as sports go, India has a long way to go, but India has got the trend to pick up really fast, so I'm sure in a few Olympics, India would be one of the leading medal winners

why are there so many Indian's ashamed of their own country. Agreed India is a poor country compared to a few of the other biggies in the world. But we are the biggest democracy. Things take time. It's a matter of few years the Indian economy will be stronger than most west countries. Salaries in India are already almost comparing to the west. Next will come the infrastucture. then maybe, even investment into sports. Sadly you people who hate India cant even be kicked out of it, so i cant even say, dont stay here if you dont like it.

@Australian Desi..
We Indians are not ahead in sport because the government is not giving proper funding to North India when it comes to sports....
What happens when Southies try competing in sports, they fail hopelessly, like they hav done in last 50 years

Dear Mr.north,

Do you believe that Indian sportsmen are qualifying in Olymbics with the "funding" of Government...

You are really stupid..

Government had no role in sports except playing politics & corruption.Politicians makes money in the name of sports funding..

It is the hardwork & personal committements of that individuals...
Government is doing nothing to help them..

So there is no point in your argument..

Nobody prevents north people from trying to qualify for Olymbics. We already got enough people on the Olymbics squard from north. But they also failed to get a medal..

Man,
Atleast start thinking that you are an Indian..
Stop all this North/south stupidity.

Indian womens hockey team never made it past the qualifiying finishing a miserable 11th out of 12 teams participating....and last nite Aussies womens hockey team trailing 4-1 down on half time to korea... came back and smacked 4 goals to win in the 69th minute 5-4....
Go Aussies.... Go the green and gold....
Indians can win only in movies under shahrukh khan....Losers !!!

You are definitely a bitter soul. You are definitely not worth talking sense with. Improve your self image first (you want to talk smack about about India because your adopted country is currently better at sports?? you want to know who a loser is? a 2nd class australian like yourself).

nothing to discuss, enough of discussions, lets have some action please. Next time just vote for BJP. Rural guys vote en masse to anti-hindu parties such as congress, jd(S), communists, SP, but the BJP's vote-base which are middle class just sit at home happy enjoying there life. When it comes to such hindu issues, only then they regret not voting. o, stop all such discussions and kcik these muslim-lickers out of India for ever. Vote for BJP, even the candidate is more corrupt that the other candidates, at least he wont target the citizens on the basis of their birth religion.

The problem as i see
by Sunit Kumar on Aug 11, 2008 02:38 AM  | Hide replies

WRONG LOGIC : We have a major economic problem, the first thing everyone thinks is how to earn money for living and that is correct, only very few coruageous take the route of sports, people with average intelligence go on to take education as a way to earn living.

PHYSICAL FITNESS: Where our schools have SPORT DAYS (which is 3-4 days in a year) and PT as 1/2 hr period and other wise some LANGDI/ KHOKO, where do you expect to produce children with stamina. How many Indian Men/ Women above the age of 25 cant run for 20 minutes to cover 3 Kms, thats the basic Thread Mill exercise.

FINANCIAL RETURNS: The welknown financial returns are only seen in Cricket so far though Tennis is catching up.

LESS TALENT POOL: you cant expect a few thousand children playing in cities/ towns can create a international stars, there has to be large en mass participation of general populations and then we can have some choice.

Remember HUM HONGE KAMIYAAB EK DIN. A day will come when some Narayan Murthy will create an Infosys of Sports in India, i wish i could do it !!!

Have a nice day and sorry for the long mail !!

U R on the spot Sunil. Create a cricket-like infrastructure in all the sports, we will start winning Olympic medals. Rightnow Indian sports infrastructure compared to China is almost negligible, forget about US, Germany etc. etc.

superb analysis Sunit, you have just echoed the words of millions of Indians. Unless we reform our schooling, things are bleak. In western countries, children are truly developed allround, they learn swimming, and other stamina-sports at very early age, and also are encouraged. We need to reform our education system to produce healthy minds and able bodies.
