India and the OLympics

Our sports' bodies are simple bureaucratic organisations that are there to give a few unimportant and mediocre people the occasion to travel abroad on govt. money, eat and make merry without a thought to the athletes they are supposed to represent.

We have no serious organisation set up with a competent managing body to coordinate the training and identification of athletes fit to compete on an international level.
I saw 2 Punjabis on sculls who came last almost one minute late in the heats whereas Italy, Australia, Cuba shot to the end.
Now Punjab has heatlthy people no doubt, but which Punjabi goes rowing?
Take an Andhra or Kerala boatsman who hauls tonnes of goods on the rivers and canals. Train him and he'll probably sweep through to a victory since his stregth requires him to simply manouevre a small light craft.
NO, our Olympics committee which is always in greater numbers than our athletes flies abroad, watches international events free of charge, takes along family and friends, and does nothing to bring the country up in sports.
Our population alone should offer x times greater chances than the rest of the world. Isn't it time to protest now that the events are seen all over India and we realise how incompetent our sports bodies are? When will we learn to say "ENOUGH! We do not want to be humiliated like this anyomore just to let you officials show off your importance without results"

well, if participation is more important than winning then India have done well in all the olympics, otherwise it is a sorry tale. sad to know that with more than one billion of people in india, we cant produce even one gold medal, the current bunch of monkeys participating wont get even one medal - they will be eating and drinking - all free of cost - what a picnic they are having - we also should be given a chance to join this picnic thru lucky draw's. Sonia would have got atleast one medal if given a chance. we can criticize china for many things, but just the opening ceremony of the olympics have shown that they are light years ahead of us, perhaps we have more tribals monkeys like mayawati trying to become PM india can conduct tribal olympics and try to win some medals.

Indian Sports

Hi Folks,

Before knowing anything don't talk much. Did you guys (the forum users) have any contribution in sports? I know you don't have. Ask yourself why first and then analyze. Do you have any idea for hockey how many Astro-Turf is there in Pakistan and how many India? Pakistan have almost 80 whereas in India only around 15 I guess. So, see the dedication from our sports management. What we do, instead of supporting players always criticize them, whether they win or loose much talk about cricket, instead of playing less ;). Thats what you guys are doing in rediff forum as well. Very less sensible message. What a shame on you guys.

Perfect start by our Shooters
by vijay singh on Aug 09, 2008 06:33 PM  | Hide replies

After all these years of training and .... what they have to say is "Still, it was a good experience and now I know the areas I need to work on," she said.
they are only good for commonwelth games and trhat sort of useless games. our shooters/player only want to secure a goverment job and after that they perform like a Shit. at we must have some perameters for there qualification which must be followed stringenty. the Olympic team must have only those players who have at least asian games record on his or her name. if this is not so then dump them in our country for much needed practice. So after the failure they won't say "Still, it was a good experience and now I know the areas I need to work on,". why are IOC and its chairman Kalmadi wasting taxpayers money. they can still watch opening ceremony and all that on TV. whats the use of wasting such a huge amount of money for such proven nonperformers. i.e. Anjali Bhagwat - this is not her first Olympic.

I think all those who have written these messages have never played any competitive sport in their lives. The Indian shooters practise under the most challenging conditions, they cannot get access to arms and ammunition due to stupid and illogical policies of the Govt. How many know that in preparation for Athens many girls spent their own money to train. Each and every sportsperson in India is treated like dirt by many pompous officials and the federations.
Look at the list of coaches in all sports, how many of them have even played the game they are trying to coach in? Whay has the IOA done other than lobby for events in India.

These shooters are the Gladiators of modern India but we send them to battle bereft of arms and ammunition and then expect miracles.

But this time training facilities were excellent and why is that these same people perform so good elsewhere and absolutely totally fail (29th and 39th) to deliver in Olympics.
Do you have any answer

When you know this, shouldn't we start a campaign to protest against this? Where are the private companies who can sponsor these athletes? Those with web design knowledge can start a site denoucing this attitude and we can get the public to be aware of what nonsense the government officials actually are capable of.

Its not about these shooters its about the people in the country. No one interested in sports and the Gov. not interested in encouraging sports. It should have to start from school level. But in our country it started from the olympic preparation. Dont forget these are the best in the country and then have a feel for the rest.

Expecting a gold medal start? India don't change.
by C Kr on Aug 09, 2008 03:40 PM  | Hide replies

The usual shame bandwagon has started to roll.
This is what will happen:

Sania Mirza will crash out Rd I. Same in doubles.
Paes and Bhupathy will get to semis and lose the bronze. Then they will get into a slanging match in the media.
Saina Nehwal will be invisible
All shooters will do a cipher, and one will 'get close' and not get a bronze. It's already started.
Swimming - hahahahaha
Athletics - lol. Anju '4 meters' George?
Hockey - oops, India didn't qualify. good. no embarrassment at the games
Weighlifting ... oh wait, she was doped out before the Olympics started.

Rest anyway tourists in the squad. And of course 'officials' - the usual b'stads.

Indian 'athletes' should be the only ones allowed to take drugs, dope to enhance performance. They still may not win anything. However, this will be the same as our reservation policy, and this country is used to that.
