Mixed?
by Arsenal on Aug 10, 2008 06:37 PM

"Mixed" means that there were some wins and some losses. I don't see where we won and got a medal in any event?

How can this be termed as "mixed" opening?

Olympics for picnic
by sreenath maniyalath on Aug 10, 2008 02:32 PM

There is no hope for India to get medals unless people like Kalmadi who rules roost in sports is shown the door.No accountability for these politicians who exploit the funds for their pleasure and leisure. Atleast they can initiate to start Kabbadi as an event and hope for the medals in the intital years then fade out. Then we can invent some other less popular games and hope for a similar miracle.Horse trading for example or live sting shows to boot.

OLYMPICS HANG OVER
by Superfine on Aug 10, 2008 01:53 PM

We always bemoan our failure to perform before and after every olympics.

But we cannot win a medals. Its same old story.
We end up wasting time infront of tvs watching cricket and discussing nonsense about these cricketers.

Probably our shooters were practising on Bikes all the while. But Olympics rule donot allow shooting on Bike. Change the rule or create some event like Biko-shooting Modelling, Chak De for Nothing.

Your point of physical fitness may not be correct Rani., I hope it all depends on how you are brought up... Most of us are not confident about our self and not MENTALLY strong and have the desire to WIN.. May be you can have some foreign coaches to train our guys to improve this... However the whole of our society is mostly having negaitve thinkers than positive thinkers...

But your point on cricket is completly not acceptable as it also needs all the quanlities you mentioned...

the point that we are physically week is not true.

Its more to say of our life style, our interests, our food habits. here most of us dont respect hard work and we give more importance to easy money and things that encourages corruption.

most of us need servents for doing our day to day things and see those works as inferior etc.. and lot to say.

Very difficult to understand how educated people make such moronic comments. Just a case in point Twenty eight (28) army teams from 12 countries comprising of Botswana, France, India, Malawi, Malaysia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, UK, USA and Zimbabwe participated in the endurance competition of armies from around the world. , India and defending champions South Africa fielded eight, two and four teams respectively. Indian team emerged victorious - the last competition happened in 2002.
Secondly a track record of China will show you that a decade back they were nowhere on the Olympic scene let alone all the bull shit about agility- cos if that is the case check out the agility of the north eastern frontier especially Gorkhas - will put a lot of people to shame. It was only when China decided not to field a team for Olympics due to the abysmal performance and went back to revamping the entire system.
Simple but well implemented principles - start early (some of the swimmers and gymnasts in the Chinese team have been as young as 12- 13 years), Insitutionalise sports (basic ameneties for training and good nutrition - not meat eaters!!!) and a strict recrtuiment policy cutting out red tapism and corruption!! And here is the Chinese team today taking on the world just a decade later....

So before talking abt 'race' get to the meaning of it - no nationality is genetically superior - its just hardwork and a can do attitude which some morosn just dont have -!!

Dear Aman, you have unwittingly given the solution yourself -

most of us need servents for doing our day to day things and see those works as inferior etc.. and lot to say.

If we have become so loaded with money, as to afford servants for all works, why not keep paid servants who will toil for money & then go ahead & win glory for India in Sports Events? After all, what matters is getting medals, ain't it? & also the fact that Sports is considered the most - lowly thing in India......

There is a separate article in the sports section

Mangal Singh Champia set alight the Olympic Green Archery Field to finish second in a field of 64 in the ranking round, which won him an easy draw in the elimination stage which starts on August 13.

India's lone male archer in Beijing [Images] Olympics [Images] finished just one point behind Mexican Juan Serrano who topped the chart scoring 679.

Situation of Sports in the Country...
by Souvik Jana on Aug 10, 2008 06:14 AM  | Hide replies

We are a population of over 1 billion. Still we are not getting enough young people to be good enough in sports and qualify in the Olympics. In my opinion the attitude towards sports has to be blamed. In India, Cricket is God. Young people in India dream of becoming Cricketers and even Parents support them as if they become a part of the Indian Team they will earn huge amount of money... What about other sports... Are you crazy... They are doomed... No parents would want their child to go there... Where is the money?? Where is the fame?? There is nothing there.... Look at the situation of Hockey, Football and other sports apart from cricket.... Is there any chance of changes?? I dont think so.... The current youth has to get jobs.... So that they can show a high prestige in society... There is no prestige in other sports except Cricket.... And you expect people to be as good as Players from other countries... Those players have a passion towards the game. In our country there is no Passion towards any other game except Cricket... So dont hope... if we do win a medal, consider that lucky....

Souvik my sentiments EXACTLY..ONE billion plus population and how many sportsperson???? Here in australia every child must learn a sport..theres NO way you can skip it..and during exams, you wont find exams held on fridays coz its sports day..
As a result of this a lot of indian parents send their kids to Selective schools or Indian schools..its our mentality..nothing else..
and its not going to change for a long time..

don't damn cricket , cricket is not the only thing in india , i have also grown out of liking cricket . But how many other games are there in india which are properly organized , have you been to a hockey match ever.. or a tennis match or may be any other games event .The problem is in our attitude , the attitude that playing sports is a waste of time so we should always study which will help us secure our future

Cricket is not at all organised. Fortunately for Indian Cricket, for rest of the playing nations its dying. still our performance is average. India is playing test cricket since 1932 and has won one world cup, whereas look at srilanka, they got one WC also though they joined test cricket only in 1983. Unfortunately for Football / Hockey more developped nations started playing it, where we can not keep pace. so nothing great about cricket or nothing damning about other sports. Every where its shameful.

Oh yeah? & what great secure future do we get by studying, can you tell friend? In fact, what great education system or emplyment facility does India boast of? Nothing, isn't it? Ultimately (sports part), that means India is a big zero on all fronts.

Why can not India win medals as par as other countries, just look other smaller developing nations !
by huzefa hakimi on Aug 10, 2008 05:31 AM  | Hide replies

I would say the players tried their best, but may be were not that good for others. I think in India we are much focused on other things than the goal. If take a look at countries like Morroco, Turkey, and broken up from USSR, even with that small population and much lesser resources as we have India, why are players able to win and up here are pretty behind. Why is it with a population over a billion, we have difficulty of winning medal and generally our nation is back with one or two medals at it's best!

i meant "if take a look at countries like Morroco, Turkey, and even small broken up countries from USSR, even with that small population and .... ", did not say they were Turkey and Morocco were part of USSR ... @saumil, never in the post u tried to touch the subject why in India even after such a large population is not as par in sports. And may be as illustrated in post before we Indians are much focused on other things, as u in ur post instead of sharing ur thoughts on the topic's matter were more towards finding faults in post above!
