Hard to understand...
by Pankaj Mohan on Apr 11, 2008 09:29 PM  | Hide replies

What could have Paes achieved had he been playing solo? May be he could have climbed up to the 60th spot...or 50th? The grand slams he won after grouping with Bhupathi are the only worth mentionable achievements of his career apart from a bronze at Olympics, which has little value in the real (commercial) tennis. In fact, both went on to excel in the doubles even after breaking up, which again was largely because of their earlier experience as a doubles pair. Both have to be thankful to each other for whatever they have gain in tennis. Paes reminds of sour grapes by the way he has spoken today.

What are you trying say dude? Earning an Olympic medal looks like joke to you or something? How many Indian sportsperson has won an Olympic medal in individual category? Answer is very few. You should have kept this in mind before saying that it has very little value.

You objection to my statement is based on the fact that very few Indians have won Olympic medals in the past. That is because we Indians lack in sports in general, and not since Olympic Bronze medals were any exceptional events. Besides in tennis, the real test comes from the commercial circuit where you have to face the top brass unlike in the Olympics, where only selected few from each country will make it out to the venue. I may or may not be right in my judgment about it, but the grand slams Paes and Bhupathi had won were the first truly major breakthrough for the Indian tennis IMHO.

PS - I remember jumping and shouting in joy for several minuted when I was first told about Paes' winning of the Olympic bronze back in those days...but then again, it is since we hardly win any Olympics medals, and not because that proved a tennis player's true caliber.

I'll just add, I didn't try to look down at Paes' Olympic efforts. I was only trying to point at the enormity of results Paes and Bhuapthi got together as a team for India.

Uncalled for!!!

I didnt expect this from Paes. Maybe he thinks that he's doing India a favour by playing for the country. Heyho, being an Indian thats ur duty mate!! Ur doing no one any favours, just urself. If that pumps up ur ego and go around saying what you like, the country is better of without fellas like you. Go and settle in the states or UK and play for them. Yes, they will give you a big bungalow and loads of money.

Will Indian tennis miss you if your gone? Yes and NO. Yes- we may not win as many matches, NO: we could without an arrogant soul.

Sorry if my comments are harsh, just found Paes to be be immature at this level of his career. If your reading this mate, sorry once again, i can't but speak my mind out!!

i agree 100% with you he is after fame and want all of it for him.Suddenly when somebody(mahesh) is there to challenge him he is telling all these things .how many players has he groomed or mentored?, the most selfish guy to have ever played the sport.

How many players Sachin Tedulkar mentored? You will call him selfish too? Whatever happened between Mahesh and Leander is pure misundersatnding and ego clash. That's their personal matters. We should better stay away from it. What Leander has achieved and what his contribution to this sport and country is unquestionable. And it's fact, your poor remark can't change this.

Mr Paes, what you lack is maturity. You are the captain of the team.May be if you had not played with Bhupathi, you would not have won those titles or just say you would not be here to make those comments.

Congrats, but Paes should b more matured
by Ram Sharma on Apr 11, 2008 08:29 PM

Congrats to the winning tennis team. However Paes should not have aired his negative views in public for the sake of the game. He should b more matured.

Ego first then Country
by Alok Maharana on Apr 11, 2008 08:00 PM  | Hide replies

It%u2019s very much clear that Lee-Hesh are considering ego first to country. From the last three world cups, we all are considering them as our best bet for Olympic gold medal. But instead of sorting out their problems, they are involving in blame games only. If they think for the country and try to build their team (at least for Olympic), then definitely they won't use any derogative statements for each other at least up to Olympic.
