Why I will never watch a game of football, basketball or hockey

In chess, each player is legally and freely allowed to make moves and counter-moves. The player who is able to use this freedom meaningfully and constructive is able to win. Otherwise he loses or ends the match in a draw.

In lawn tennis, badminton, table tennis, volley ball, each player or team is given freedom to serve and the opponent enjoys unobstructed privilege to return the served ball and score points.

In cricket, bowler is given freedom to run in and bowl at a batsmen and batsmen is equipped with a bat to hit the ball where he likes. Of course there are fielders who restrict the ball from going over to the boundary but the test of skill of the batsmen at the crease lies in their ability to place and time their shots, beat the fielders in a healthy way and score singles, twos or boundaries.

In sharp contrast to these true games and sports, in games like football, basketball or hockey, no player is allowed to have a free run with the ball to score points. Every player obstructs every player. IT IS DIFFICULT TO VISUALISE HOW ANY PLAYER CAN BE PREVENTED FROM SCORING FREELY UNLESS THE BALL IS FORCIBLY REMOVED FROM HIM. Perhaps the only exception is in the case of penalty shoot outs when the shooter is not obstructed physically but there is a sporty attempt to stop the ball from crossing the goal post.

I hate to call football, basket ball and hockey as games or sports at all. They appear to be exercises in violence, worse than wrestling or boxing!

You are entitled to your opinion but both football and hockey can be fascinating to play as well as watch.

As regards the freedom that a player enjoys in these games, just watch Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United and see how much of free flowing football he displays week on week. It is indeed a treat to watch him fox the opposition defenders each time he shows his footwork. The rules of the game are designed such that there is no undue physical challenge on any player.

Mr. Saxena, thanks for your gentlemanly comments. Often my posts invite nasty comments from self styled experts. It is refreshing and satisfying to have proper exchange of ideas like yours.

I agree with you on what you say about players like Ronaldo. What disturbs me is the rough play adopted by many teams like those from South Korea and some from South Americas.

Also, I am irritated by players of one side preventing players from the other side by holding their shirts, making them fall by criss crossing legs etc.
