Sania is the proud of woman in India. She single handedly overcome the madness of cricket mania in India and made her own identity and crores of Fans for her. She is really deserve all the appreciation. I hope to have more such person who is a success in other sports than cricket. Well Done Sania.. Thanks.

thr r already many such players (both men and women) in india.. but media only hype sania bcoz of her beauty...

we have world no. 2 humpy in chess. she bring 2 gold medals for india in asian games... she is far ahaead than sania..

thr r many in the list.. but who cares..

in india, it doesn't matter what u r doing for da nation, its matter how much media is covering u...

its really shameful

Attacker, that is a pretty stupid comparison. Chess is not equal to Tennis in the eyes of the sports lovers of the world. If Sania Mirza was #2 in the world in Chess she would have got the same coverage that Koneru Humpy gets today. And vice versa, if Humpy was World #27 in tennis and one of the rising stars she would have got the same coverage that Sania gets. So it isn't beauty but the fact that in a highly visible sport like womens tennis, Sania is by far the best India has produced among women tennis players and her achievements are very laudable. Humpy's achievements are equally or perhaps more laudable, but she operates in a sport which is not that visible. Incidentally there also are some very good-looking women in Indian Chess also therefore to underline the point, beauty has nothing to do with it.

Having said that, please allow me to turn my point around full circle and say that beauty has everything to do with it! We are talking about women's tennis here and unless you and me are plain dumb or lying through our teeth, there is no denying that the sport is watched and followed by people like you and me not because of the ferocity of the players forehands or the deftness of their drop shots, but equally for the female assets they possess. So let's not kid ourselves also, and not judge unfairly a 19 year-old girl who has guts and gumption, looks good, and is trying her best to play some good tennis as is evident from her rise up the ranking. GO SANIA GO!!!!

Rajeev,

for ur info, chess is second most played sports after football... and tennis is third..

if sania wud have been a chess player then too media had hyped her... bcoz in india thr r less sportive persons as compared to people like u who watched women sports for their assets not for the love of game.

thr r many women champs in indian sports like shooting, weightlifting, athletics, and hockey. why they r not giving hype.. bcoz for media only beauty matters not the talent and nation.. and so the public...

can u name even a single sportsperson in india, who can b even comparable to vishy anand? but media is not giving deserving coverage to him..

thr is no doubt, sania has done a gr8 job for nation.. we r proud of her.. but their r others too who need to b recognized by our biased media

All failures under one roof
by Suresh Ganti on Sep 18, 2007 03:19 PM  | Hide replies

looks like indian failures have more demand inside and outside india. dont know why indian cricket and tennis is given more platform on national and international leaving hockey. i feel hockey play and players must be given more importance in all respects as they really deserve it. though they couldnot do much but yes they have proved well in the recent tournament.

why sania is given much importance. she is standing at 27th place is she the only one lady from india. try to encourage others who are more promissing than sania. she is a failure in all tournaments. the best way to defend is injuries. take a doctor certificate and rest at home for nothing.
