Hockey on the rise...hopefully!
by Arun Nair on Sep 11, 2007 07:26 AM

Folks, there seems to be some ambiguities about democratic norms here. I had observed that the Indian victory in the Asia Cup was simply due to the superb performance by the team on the field. I had also expressed my opinion about the administration of the IHF, which we hockey lovers know has done more harm than good in the recent past. Yet, my observations have been 'removed permanently' by the rediff team. Why is that we are afraid to call a spade a spade at times? The hockey administration in our country has often bungled with the players, coaches, tournaments etc. Is that something to be brushed under the carpet and neglected? That is the reason perhaps that the administration does whatever it fancies, and hockey suffers. Let us all work to keep up this momentum now, and see hockey back to its glorious pedestal, with more democracy and transaparency in the hockey administration at least. This is not cricket, folks!

Hockey team, Great win keep it up and I guess atleast chennai hasn't forgotten about hockey and packs a full house. Its my city anyways. Great job by Karunanidhi to be there to encourage the players. Maybe he should announce an award for the hockey team.

Time has come for Indian Women Hockey Team to get a good coach like MK Kaushik
by yakshyap arora on Sep 11, 2007 02:57 AM  | Hide replies

M.K Kaushik is a great motivator and brilliant strategist. It was under his umbrella that Indian Eves was able to improve and exhibited great performance at the Asian level by defeating South Korea and China earlier when was the coach.
His first International assignment was also with Men Hockey Team in 1998 during the Asian Games which was won by our Men Team for the first time thanks to the brilliant form of Ashish Ballal. However beginning of this new chapter turned into a nightmare as 6 senior players including Goal keeper Ashish Ballal who was in his prime form , Mukesh kumar , Dhanraj Pillay, Gagan Ajit Singh were shown the door along with sacking of Mr Kaushik. This politics of IHF spelled an end to the career of Mukesh Kumar and the Gallant Goal keeper Ashish Ballal.M K Kaushik should be reinstated asap else if foreign coaches are to be hired then they should be of Tier-I quality who charge hefty amount for contracts instead of current low quality foreign coach hired for the Women Hockey Team . Given the kind of resources IHF has MK Kaushik seems to be the best ption.

yes kaushik was the best but he was too honest for our indian hockey management. he fell out of place with jyothikumaran when jyothi wanted to select some of his goons and kaushik said that wasnt going to happen. Too MK Kaushik is an example of great talent wasted because of egos of people in high positions.

Couple of Observations
by Vinu Bhardwaj on Sep 11, 2007 01:31 AM

Good victory but it is only Asia cup. The best teams are not in Asia. Koreans complained about diarrhea to 8 players ( a common ailment for visitors to India due to dirty living conditions), bad sportsmanship by Prabhjot for hitting a Korean player...
India's true mettle would only be known when they beat European powerhouses in their home

I have just scrolled through some of the messages sent. Some of them feel india would suffer against aus, ned, ger and spain. If india plays the way they play they can beat aus and spain.Defeating ger and ned is a different proposition not bcause they are invincible but because of other factors.Beating them would depend on the venue and the umpires. If it is a europian venue india will find it difficuilt as most of the decisions are unfavorable.Added to this is FIH's own contributions. As most of the comitee members belong to nedor other european countries they change and frame rule to their convenience. One such example was the penalty corner rule wherein a player can be substituted during a penalty corner. So their drag flicker remains seated in the bench until he was called for.Once non eurupean countries stated to take advantage of this rule it was removed.of course we havent been playing well but these things like umpiring and rules could affect the rhythm of even a good side.Even 10 years back we had a superb team.Ind and Pk used to be in top 4 but never in 1 and 2.These things has always prevented them to come up

Congratulations

heartiest congratulations to the winning Indian team. in a blog earlier someone had suggested having mr. carvalho or mr. sommaiya as the coach of the indian team and no interference from the ihf. at least the first wish came true and it brought limited success. hope the second also comes true and we have greater successes. IHF should concentrate on developing the game at grassroot level also and arrange better finance. also it is high time media takes coverage of real hockey more seriously than chak de India. media (english, both print and television)i know you are too arrogant to listen to hockey lovers like, but you owe us this exposure to the stars of the Indian hockey team. also you owe detailed analysis of each international match played by us like you do to cricket. are you listening ndtv, ibn, times and other self glorified media.

Time the media woke up from a one game show (Cricket). The country is waiting...Jaago Bharat Jaago...The most corrupt, boring and national waste of a game of cricket needs to be kicked out. Make all the cricket stadiums into a multi-sport complex..
