Serious tennis discussions
by ssbmat on Oct 23, 2007 03:50 AM

REading through all these comments, I get the feeling that discussions on technique and game analysis should ONLY be done by people who "PLAY" the game. Unlike cricket or Soccer, which is a team game and can be discussed by laypersons, from the panwalla to the president, serious tennis discussion cannot be made without having played the game.90% of the people who watch tennis are biased by personal favorites like Becker, Edberg or personalities like Borg, Connors , McEnroe.
So when one hears comments like "Federer cannot be consistent like Becker" the quality of the opinion is immediately exposed. For those who keenly pursue the game, it is worthless trying to explain the W--I---D---E Chasm between a Becker, who won 6 GrandSlams between 1985 and 1996, and Federer who has won 12 between 2003-2007. The sight of the sluggish Becker falling to the ground to attempt volleys seems so laughable when compared to the swiftness of a Nadal or Federer. The present generation of tennis Athletes is superior in every way. But as with all things, people have tendency to relapse into the past, just like you hear Grandpas talking about cricket referring to Umrigar or Mankad or Sobers and others from the 60s.

Sampras vs Federer may warrant a discussion, but it is moot because in their only encounter, Federer defeated Sampras. Now, even in their respective prime, Federer would have the advantage of speed. He is the best mover on the court-when he needs to move.

Good Result for Tennis
by Anand on Oct 22, 2007 03:08 PM

It is a very good result as the entire Tennis world is used to FedEx win in every tourney he plays.

I wish with the rise of Djovick and the return of the form of Nalbandian, Nadal, Roddick, Cannas... Men's tennis would be much more interesting to watch.

Hope this goes for the best to the interest of Tennis as a Global Sport.

Fantastic Match!! Always knew Nalbandian had it in him to create such upsets...Rafa's defeat was a disappointemtn. However, I wished Federer continued his winning streak. But hats off to Nalbandian....He was too good for Rogy this time!

Hail Nalby!
by prakash mohanasundaram on Oct 22, 2007 12:31 PM

Nalbandian is a highly talented player, who has been among the best till mid-2006. He is a former world number 3 and had been a nemisis for Federer in the past before Nadal emerged. For the last 18 months he had been a shadow of his mighty self and his results plummeted. Madrid is in many ways a revival of sorts for Nalby. Hope he stays fit and focussed and hopefully gets back to the TOP 5 where he rightfully belongs

BTW Navoday, this yr out of 8 ATP Masters Federer had only won 2,Djokovic also 2 and nalbandian 1.remaining 3 had been won by Nadal. So this is not the only time that federer had lost it.

Nalbandian

Only Nalbandian and Nadal are the two players who are anyway near to beat Federer. Nalbandian lost close battles against Federer in the last 3 years.

Federer threw the game away. Whats 100k purse compared to 10 million from the betting mafia. Let the flame wars begin
