Sampras Vs Federer
by Rajiv Shivashankar on Nov 23, 2007 10:06 AM  | Hide replies

Fedex is great, but the competition he now faces is not as impressive as Sampras faced to get his 14 Grand Slams. Pete is still the best, and Andre, Borg, Lendl, Courier, Ivanisevic, Edberg, etc. were comparable. Today there is no one who is comparable, hence Fedex is great.

I donot agree.Sampras was never as consistent as Federer.Sampras used to lose matches against lowly ranked players quite often.Even at Grand Slams, other than at Wimbledon,he used to lose against people other than ndre, Borg, Lendl, Courier, Ivanisevic, Edberg.

And at French Open,he made to the semis just once and all other time, lost in the early rounds..and it was never a Becker,Edverg,Agassi who took him out.
The last 3 yrs,Nadal is tehonly who has been able to beat Fed at French Open.

Borg retired well before Sampras became a pro

Guys when did sampras play competitive tennis with Borg or lendl or for that matter edberg. He also played becker when becker was a fading force. His only stiff comp[etition came from the likes like courier, agassi, ivanisevic.

I agree Federer has just got to be a better allround, allcourt player than Sampras ever was.Sampras was basically a 'no show' at the French .Even in other slams there were occassions when he has lost to lesser players ( sometimes in straight sets)like Richard Krajicek at Wimbledon in 1996, Marat Safin at the US Open ( 2000), Lleyton Hewit at the US Open ( 2001 Or 2002) ,all in straight sets. It is difficult to recall when Federer last lost to a lesser player in straight sets ,especially at a grand slam.Even on his least favoured surface -clay, he is the second best clay -courter now , even managing to beat the best-Nadal at the Hamburg Open earlier this year.

Still Great

There is no doubt that Federer is great player but he never faced healthy competition as Sampras faced as Agassi, courier, edberg, becker, and many more. there is only Nadal giving him work for game.

Dont forget about Ivanisevic as well...I feel Pete is still the best...since that time many were equally powerful..
Now I dont see that quality with any of the current players

I am not completely agree...why don't we consider that Federer has created this much gap b/w himself and other players because of his quality of play. Sampras couldn't do that..so we generally say that he had tough competition. And on clay also he has reached in to the finals that sampras couldn't do...so I would say both are class players but federer is having edge over sampras.

Great encounter indeed

What a close match it was! Thanks to lack of match practice for 5 years at on a trot, else it was only Sampras who was sure to win!! Just watch out the last match on Saturday...

Pete Still Rocks
by Arijitkamal Manna on Nov 23, 2007 08:36 AM

Federer is the undisputed king of tennis now. But Pete still remembers a thing or two about tennis... 7-6, 7-5... Unbelievable... Pete rocks...
