Stupid Idiots
by Nigel Menezes on May 11, 2007 12:45 PM

There are a bunch of jokers sitting in the sports ministry to demote hockey. Hockey never really got support. underpaid players, crap facilities, not enough astroturfs.

Im a social hockey player in Indonesia and i get to play on astroturf. Think again...

although Gill is a dictator, and we have issues onm how he runs the IHF, the sports ministry takes the cake.

I feel sorry for our indian team

Idiotic decisions by the government
by Ganesri on May 11, 2007 05:57 AM

What the hell is with the government and its rules. The government provides more funds to the sports which has achieved medals or cups by promoting them to 'prority' catagory. But the other games don't get money for their survival which means the government is destroying and helping to degrade a game which is already in worst situation.!!!

Instead, the government should allocate funds and facilities for the games which are in poor situation, so that they could improve in future. Anyhow, the sports which have popularity and have good sports persons automatically survive without the government's help e.g., cricket.

So, I suggest the government to reverse its rule like " a sport which is in poor situation is in endanger and should be given 'high priority' for the improvement" and "the games or sports which are performing good are in 'low priority', as they can survive with sponsors and the funds from other organizations"

These games will rot becuase there are no international calibre players! It does not matter who is at the top, because whoever it is , is corrupt. That said KPS Gill is a whole lot better then the likes of Pawar (what is he doing there), Munshi (what a hoke) ... and the corrupt Suresh Kalmadi!

Till the people like Gill and others are thrown out of Indian sports, we will be limited to taking part in the opening ceremony marchpasts at international tournaments.

The utter ruin in which our national sport is solely based on KPS Gill...he has slowly but surely turned us into minnows from hockey giants...cricket is headed in the same direction...he should resign and let somebody else run the sport..I used to love the sport but now it is a joke...he has alienated all teh good players..Dhanraj Pillai...etc...

Where is the talent besides Dhanraj? Nobody in the country wants to play hockey. How long is Dhanraj supposed to play - till he is 50. What KPS Gill did was right.

Dhanraj was treated terribly while he was playing. You are really crazy if you think Gill ever did the right thing. He should be thrown out immediately.

What about these Harpal, karpal...People are still under the illusion that sardars are best for hockey, but, the truth is that there is not even a single good one, right now....This harpal dosen't know how to pass a ball...keeps playing with the ball himself, until someone from opposition team grabs the ball...
There are some really good players from other states also...IHF should concentrate on the talent, rather than the regionalism.

My dear friend, you seem to be from some remote village where only cricket is shown.India is still very rich in hockey talent. Perhaps you have not heard the names of Gagan Ajit Singh,Dilip Tirkey,Jugraj Singh. There is lots of talent. The only thing that brng Indian hockey back is the involvement of stupid administrators.Get rid of Gill and replace him by Dhanraj. In the next Olympics,India will finish on the podium.

Poor Performance in Hockey
by Sandeep Kulshrestha on May 10, 2007 12:53 PM  | Hide replies

I wonder if India has won an major tournament in CRICKET since 1992 or so. Had the same approach applied then why on the earth the government keeps on supporting the cricket on every front eg congratulating them in parliament even for departing for the world Cup where they even failed to do nothing.

It is true that India failed to perform in Hockey but the Govt itself is responsible for that.

Oh really? I pity on your judgement on "major tournaments".. if you are talking of world cups it should 1983 not 1992..visit any cricket website to see tournaments/series we won till date after 1992. And it is not just winning, Indian cricket team performance is definitely far far ahead than that of Hockey. What way govt is supporing cricket? Cricket is generating money on its own. Parliament always congratulate/wishes any winner or team send to Olympics or so. D0 u remember Rana, Sania being congrulated in parliament.

hello rakesh...

Q What way govt is supporing cricket?

-- dd news and sports channels give 10 times coverage to cricket than any other sports.

-- in parliament govt have never congratulates players like anand and others on their great achievemnents. players like anand are far ahead than any cricketer in india. in parliament thr was discussion on cricket but hardly any discussion on other sports.

-- thr r many govt jobs with weightage to cricketers over other sportspersons.

thr r many such ways indian govt is biased towards sports.

Dear Rakesh

It wud hv been much better if u had come with the name of the tounaments, Indian Cricket Team won after 1992. You just cant deny the fact the Cricket has got support from every quarter even at DD where they can even show a cricketer sneezing.

Sharjah (beating Aus), Natwest (beating England), CocaCola Cup (shared with SA).. and in many many more we lost in FINALS. This is indeed very good performance. 96, 2003 world cups we reached semis & finals. Do not forget about enormous series wins during these periods( now do not ask me to name thses series).

DD alone is not showing cricketer sneezing. All are showing becasue huge section of masses loves to see it !! Present scenario may be different but still it sells. But mind it, this not govt policy. Govt spends more and more time on policy decision on any other sport than cricket. No policy decison in taken on cricket in parliament.
How many watch DD sports when it is not telecasting cricket? Look at the viewership of Hockey or any other sport. No takers.

It is market driven economy. Success drives all. When sania, anand, Pace creates milestones, they get focus than anyone else. there is no weightage kind of thing to cricketers in govt jobs. Private industry alone would chase cricketer for the sake revenue generation by wooing them.
This does not mean that govt doing sufficient for other games. What is lacking is the support from common masses for other games.

How many countries play cricket and how many play hockey?Considering that, even if the hockey team finishes in the top 6 in any event,it is equivalent to winning the cricket world cup. Winning bullshit tournaments like Sharjah and getting humiliated in the world cup final is no achievement. Cricket is not even popular enough in the world to be considered as an Olympic sport. Other sports should first come near to India's 8 Olympic golds and then claim superiority.
