why Anand lives in Spain
by on Mar 21, 2007 10:41 PM

To make a living out of playing chess, you have to be in the top 10. To sustain at that level, you have to shell a lot of money to hire "seconds". Just imagine brining seconds from Europe to India before every major tournament to come up with new moves - Boy that should cost some money, let alone the travel time. Ofcourse, Anand will have to shell that money from his own pocket. In Europe, there is no shortage of former "Top 10" players who will work as seconds. This is probably the reason why Anand lives in Spain. On the same note, I'm note sure how many Indians can really break into the top 10. You have to do that before he or she is 25yrs old.

Anand has some loss of confidence when he plays topalov kramnik or gata kamsky!
he lost to all of them a lot in recent times. he needs psychologist's help in overcoming this mental blockades. he is too gerat and too alone to approach one. hope he reads this and onsiders this option. I dont think his level of play is lesser than anyone, its just the midset against a few players.

Also, sometimes is shows erratic overambitious play and sometimes he is timid, this all shows lack of proper mental makeup.

Anand plays too many tournaments. On the other hand, you don't see Kramnik playing all tournaments. Or may be it's just me who thinks he plays too many tournaments compared to others.

its not loss of confidence. chess is a very competitive and tough game. and anand is playing at the top of this game. even a very very minute mistke can cause a game at this level.

for ur info, anand recently reached no. 1.

and anand lost in blindfold. means playing chess with ur eyes closed.

on the rapid side anand is in the race of 2nd spot yet.

I'm just wondering why there are no critics about Anand's defeat?

we have seen how rediff readers reacted to "Team India's" defeat two days back...

Is Chess not serious as Cricket? any comments?

well sriram, anand never "brought" the title to India like Kapil did. That's where the obsession comes from. Anand wud b taking the title to spain. why ask us to follow his travails when he has opted for private glory ?

Dear BP,
Anand has just become No.1 in the world!! Surely, its an unprecedented feat by an Indian sports person !! Let him settle down & on his way he might lose a few games to top ranked players like Aronian or Kramnik!!
But, like all true champs he'll bounce back, take my word 4 this!!
cheers...

Chamdi,
There is a very popular proverb in Tamil which, when translated into English, states that Donkeys do not know the fragrance of camphour. Your question is a classic example of the above proverb. You are inquiring about camphour.

Vishy needs to play a little more carefully . I think he is playing sloppy chess perhaps coz he is already no:1 in rating list . That said Vishy can still bounce back with some good performance .
Hope he is gonna play some real fighting chess in the next few rounds
