lack of skill & power
by sushil lakra on Mar 09, 2007 05:52 AM

Dear sir,
I agree with the views of Mr. ashok chere when he says that Hockey is in the blood of the Adivasis of Chotanagpur region comprising of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and orissa because I belong to that region and seen & participated playing lot of hockey tournaments at Dehat (village) level for the prizes like cock, Khassi (he-goat), Banda(type of pig, etc.The participation in the tournament is 2-3 teams from each village or even more depend upon the number of houses, also there is no age bar.It is generally quite interesting. But tribal culture is such that they never publicise or boast themselves, this one can find in the players like Dilip, Ignes,Prabodh or Bimal and others.

Interaction , the bane of Indian society
by Gajanan Mohite on Mar 09, 2007 05:09 AM  | Hide replies

Indians interact less among themselves in many areas , leaving real results to providence. The low level of intercation is mainly due to the lack of sporting facilities in schools. The only time Indians interact is when they have a "Kadak' boss.

One solution for developing any sport is coaching the coach how to coach.

Once I aspired to bcom a tennis player like Leander Paes but that not happened.I will tell the reasons,

1. bad skills - No proper coach
2. I had no power at all (didnt take protein rich food, didnt do specific exercises)
3. Not adequate courts. In a single court more than 30 wil b training.
4. Lastly - Learning tennis is a costly thing.A single raquet costs around 3000 rupees and training per month in a moderate city like coimbatore is Rs 500.

If a game has to flourish, adequate grounds, knowledgeable coach and money (either from learners or government funding) are required.

congrats to Orissa Steelers
by ashok chere on Mar 08, 2007 11:40 PM

Hockey is in the blood of the Adivasis of Chotanagpur region comprising of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and orissa. Most of the players from Orissa Steelers are tribals from this region. the PHL triumph is a sign that if the young of this region are given opportunities, they can go on to dawn India colours and the plight of Indian hockey will not be as the coach is lamenting about.

respect the comment and act on it

The Spanish coach has made very apt comments about the state of affairs in Indian Hockey worth giving a lot of thought and points to ponder over how to give real boost to our Hockey to come back a force to reckon with in the world arena. We r fortunate to have Mr. Hendriks as a consultant for PHL who has seen the level of hockey our top teams and players have played in the PHL format from very close quarters and over so many matches. We must thank him and be indebted to him for having given very candid comments about the standard of hockey he has seen here at the top level and also given so many suggestions while he could have easily given some pleasing comments which wud have tickled our senses. It was very clear that most of the foreign players particularly from the european countries and even Pakis were superior in skills who clearly gave the tournament more competitive edge in raising quality of the game and the Tourney. Most of them set up and create the chances for goals and could also convert them when opportunities came their ways. While we also boast of many world class players who honoured the tourney with their presence, overall standard of game was found to be below world standards many times with dullish, defensive and unimaginative play may be due to the fear of early loss of their chances with a good prize money never seen before in Hockey. While we must sit up and take notice of the shortcomings pointed out by a wise gentlemna of the game, it is not loose sight that the PHL has definitely all the elements of giving a major boost to our Hockey standard at the same time we have to create adequate infrastrcuture and congenial conditions all over India, tap talents latent in the corners of the country irrespective of their economic and social status, give enough hope, confidence to the young boys and girls from very early stages and their families for name, fame and money if India is to make a mark again at the world level lost for a pretty long time. sukalp, hyd

Don't talk too soon. The all powerful Gill might well take umbrage at Hendricks interview and banish him from any further part in PHL. When nincompoops like Gill are running teh show what you get is the kind of atrocious behaviour that one saw during the final.
