Meteoric rise & fall?
by sunilkumar mishra on Mar 07, 2007 10:48 PM

In a country hungry for idols and heroes in sports, it is very easy for the upcoming sports boys and girls in India particularly in sports like cricket or tennis, generating so much of passion and fantasies in the billions of mad fans expecting their new heroes to become champions overnight, to get waylaid pretty fast into love for lucre, showbiz due to sudden rise in their status. But the resultant effect is that even very talented sportspersons loose their focus for their game and fade away into oblivion almost like a meteor. Some others with little over average talent find themsleves at a plateau quickly realising their potential or lack of it to make it too big for sustaining their level at the top. These people are smart enough to understand that and clever enough to make quick hay while the sun shines. Need not tell about the third category, but it is not easy to say to which group she belongs to but she herself has nearly conceded her deficiencies in moving beyond 50 to the top. Raeching or bagging a position for a day is not important but sustaining it would only show one's mettle and worth. In any case she has been such a shining star for India in girls category but has been very inconsistent even at lower level of tournaments. Even at the current level of achievement by her, Indian tennis has surely benefited a lot. It is very sad that Sania had to face such an injury so early in her career. Let us wish her very best to recover very fast and be back on the court. sukalp, hyd

Sania haters

I don't understand why some people like to hate Sania and i also wonder why they speak rubbish without knowing her personally or professionally.Sadly for Sania haters Sania will be back and will be a better player after she comes back and she will be rank among the top 20 by the end of the tennis season.Sania is a good player, talented, attractive, well groomed ,media savvy and conduct herself appopriately. For the international community she represent India and people associate her to what modern day India is all about.Imagine someone like Lalu Prasad Yadav,LK Advani or Narender Modi representing India abroad. The world will think Indians are uncouth, uneducated, corrupted and full of religious fanatics with barbarians.I prefer Sania Mirza anyday and it dosen't matter if she is ranked the lowest.

Sania is maxed out

This is about as high (in ranking) as Sania could possibly go. Because of her latest injury, coupled with "I don't much care about winning" attitude and extra weight, it is unlikely that she will ever give sleepless nights to Justin Henin, Maria Sharapova etc.
Now, she might give sleepless nights to a few Indian bachelors (and, desparate married men)...but, that's a different matter altogether.
