Unfortunate
by Pakkiri on Jul 16, 2007 05:29 PM

What happened is really unfortunate. Such things do happen in sports and athletic events. In fact such things happen everywhere. Whether it is a wall that caved in at a construction site, a landslide on a mountainside, a tsunami over a sunny beach.

It was in true sportsmanship that Pitkamaki expressed his anguish and pain, but went on with the competition.

Area of concern
by joi sen on Jul 14, 2007 05:57 PM  | Hide replies

hi all,

i agree with the fact that one cannot change what has happened, but this is an eyeopener for the IAF and IOC who should seriously look into the possibilities of having a seperate arena for the "throwing" events, viz. shot put, discus, javelin etc. I would also like to add something for our friend Mr. Chaitanya who seems to be going over the hill with somebody else's unawareness. Please do not form opinions and judgements regarding anybody. U may come out to be the laughing stock...the way u are!!!

Regards,

Satyajit

Joi Sen,

I agree. This accident was waiting to happen and has happened many times in the past even causing deaths.

I cannot understand why they cannot have a seperate ground for the throwing events. I have seen running and long jumps going on very near the landing area of javelin etc. It is ridiculous that nobody cares.

Long jumper Sdiri hit by javelin in Rome
by Manoj Nair on Jul 14, 2007 05:34 PM

hi all,
it is a real unfortunate incident notwithstand Track and Field always having a lot of risks of getting Athlets injured with. What happened is happened, aint nobody can change that, all we can do is, pray for tht injured Athlete for a speedy recovery. But at the same time wish to say one, that, it is been said that, prevention is better than cure, so the International Athletic Federation and The International Olympic Committee will review the matter, annd make a serious look into the incident, and implement strong steps of Safety Precautions at the Arena, whereever the Track and Field Events happening all through the world. And Athletes need to check this matter as a warning, for their personal Safety measures, while in participation. Once again praying for the injured athlete, let the almighty give a speedy recovery, and good health to him. Thanks all

Injury?
by Shriniwas Deshpande on Jul 14, 2007 04:21 PM  | Hide replies

It really is a worrisome area where the athlete is been hit. He may have developed injury to lung pleural cavity or liver as per the bandage seen in the picture.

Another point.....is it a inhuman act? if somebody who threw the javelin continued with his fourth attempt?

Chaitanya, Do not stereotype indians by saying we need to stick to our cricket. Obviously Shrinivas is dumb and doesnt know much about track and fields but you don't need to resort to racism buddy.

chill guys, you'll seem to have taken things so damn personal in the first place.. lets hope that the injury int too bad and he gets fine soon with no permenant handicaps.. i know of a person who prays ever time he sees an ambulance racing or a fire engine ringing.. so spare yourself from such futile exchanges and pray for the guy if you'll are so involved already.

good luck and speedy recovery to the injured and God Bless You'll !!

have a great weekend !
