A trophy is a trophy
by samson lawrence on Jul 03, 2007 03:55 PM

if Paes concentrated on singles he would have nothing, he has many trophies so he is wise and knows his limits and takes what can be gotten. Doubles is difficult to play and therefore we dont ned to take anything of him. We would have loved Bhupati and his partnership going that would have been double fun but alas life is not all roses and when Indian Tennis doesnt have anything to show let him hide what little shame can be hidden with the trophies he can collect. Go boy till we see better boys come along.

what 5 sets? does he have the stamina to play singles
by Adarsh Industries on Jul 03, 2007 02:24 PM  | Hide replies

what is he talking...does he have the stamina to play singles....being a gr8 doubles player means nothing....it is just a money collecting method...pete sampras...federer...agassi never gave doubles a shot....so there is no need to idolize a doubles player so much....

Absolute rubbish to compare to the likes of Agassi.Shame on him to start playing doubles when he was still younger. That to partner with a stronger "White man"...Same goes to our other players especially Amritraj's sons playing in India, living in USA & ranking is not worth mentioning..Ha Ha

I think the legacy of Leander will live on for quite a while. So much effort was rarely shown by an individual towards his country.

Regardless of what people like you say, Leander is a legacy to international tennis and not only indian tennis. No one can forget his heroics against France in the Davis Cup. I know French people who still talk about it.

There are 3 to 4 things that go to make a champion player. Heart, Talent, Luck & Hardwork.

With Heart and Hardwork he made up for the less talent (as compared to say a Sampras or Federrer). Luck was not necessarily on his side. If this was the case, he might have been able to win some of those very close Grand Slam singles matches that he has played (like the one against Aggassi @ US open). And with respect to doubles he is one of the best ever in the world , in fact it is not an easy money thing as pay in doubles is nothing compared to singles. People line up to partner Leander and not vice versa.

Leander was always ready for compromises with Mahesh but sadly it never worked out. However nothing can take away the great work he has done for India.

Mr. Adarsh industries! ur knowledge about Leander Paes or Tennis is very poor. Do u know? During his heydays he beat Sampras, Goran, wally Masur, gave a tough time to Andre Agassi in the Los Angeles Olympics in the year 1996.

in davis cup he had an uncountable no. of heroics. So think many a times before u write. Gather knowledge & make comment.

in fact with due regards to ramanathan Krishnan, Vijay Amritraj, Ramesh Krishnan, Premchand Leander is the finest Tennis player ever India has produced .

Leander is great.Vijay Amritraj & Ramesh Krishnan are unforgettable heroes of Indian tennis. To criticise Sania or any one is easiest job.But here I will like to recall a great hero from Indian Badmintin who won all england championship & just this was not his biggest achievement at the top moment of his fame he got a big deal from cola company & do you people know he straight forwardly refused with words that if i advertise this useless drink youth will think that reason behind my success is cold drinks,I never want to inspire youth for these kind of things. in this current materialistic era was this deed is not a true example of heroism & petrotism with ethical values. Sorry for change in topic .

I wish all our sportsmen are like Leander. Unlike our other sporting heroes, he doesn't crumble on big occasions. Plays his heart out when representing country. Despite relatively short height, he has made a place for himself in the circuit. You can argue that he stands no where in comparison to the top 10/20 single players, but still I would say he has achieved a lot. Remember he plays game a which is much more competitive than Cricket and played by individauls from all the country, making a mark here is not easy. Still he has won Olympic medal and many Gold medals in Asian Games. Yougsters should iconise him and follow his attitude rather worshiping the Cricket 'Gods'

Sania..
by Nishant T on Jul 02, 2007 10:35 PM  | Hide replies

We all agree on following:
1) She is the best women tennis player in India.
2) She is too ordinary a player at this moment to challenge the worlds Top.

The first one is good but not extraordinary achievement. The 2nd one is not her fault either.
All she can/and should do is to try to improve and play better. If she is not doing, then we are justified in criticising her. But we cannot and must not ask her to stop playing tennis..we have no right to do so.
As far as the adulation and modelling money she gets, its because therer is market for that. Of course there are multiple factors apart from just playing tennis what gets her that (like looks etc). But its perfectly alright earning money if you can (we are in capitalist society..where what sells, sells)..and she is doing by all legal means.

Now, if we think that she is not worth watching, lets get life and have something else. But watching her and criticising (read CRIBBING) is just pathetic/loser mentality. I for one do not have much expectations from her, and would rather watch other players. She is not representing India per say..but she is playing for herself (thats true of every player playing Wimbledon for exaple). As far as REDIFF giving glossy headlines (like STORMS and CRASHESH and all that crap..they just want more hits NOTHING MORE).

U r right. She is not representing india in grandslams or any other ATP tours. In such cases, we don't have any right to criticize her. If anyone don't like her game, then avoid watching her.

Hello ajay

dont criticise leander, leander always ready to team up with mahesh, but mahesh who dont want to, he even said he don't want to represent india any more, leander always play for india and he will in future also, mahesh who cause to loose the doubles match in latest asiad, if you want find the video and watch you know why i am saying this or you go can back to last year news paper archives and read them, bhupathi is a grown kid fighting on a woman, this all he said because he is not given opportunity to play beside sania in asiad because he was india no .1 and she is india's female no.1, what an idiot, now i really want to see how far they are going to reach in wimbledon (mahesh & sania), Leander is always best and he is the greatest tennis player ever india produced.

Hi Aluru & Anjan

I am not criticising leander for that. I just want to see them performing together. We all know how good they pair up in doubles.

Yeah true they are apart for some reasons which have come up(definetly not for money Mr.Majid) and i feel that they should put up personal reasons behind and perform together for the Nation.

Mahesh is an arrogant and selfish as*&le, who cares about his own reputation.
If not Paes, Mahesh would have been forgotten as Boppanas, Zeeshan Alis, Prakash, etc..

I don't think Mahesh is an arrogant and selfish. It's just that he's not as outspoken as Leander. If that be the case he wouldn't have fought hard to win Asian Gold medal with Leander in Doha last year. I believe Mahesh is a highly misunderstood guy. He is as patriotic as Leander but it's just that he doesn't show emotions on court something which Leander does very often. Now - Why Mahesh refused to play with Leander in future tournaments? - I think that's a fair decision. Leander shouldn't have gone public in questioning Mahesh's commitment. One day a player might be completely out and might not perform well. That's natural. This shouldn't be the reason for Leander criticizing Mahesh's commitment. It's highly unprofessional. I wouldn't play with a guy who questions my commitment to win if I've an off day. Rahul Dravid also faces this problem many times but he never went on air criticizing his players' performance. No matter what, you got to defend your players.

Who told you that they won't. Relax , they will play the Olympics together. Mahesh knows that this is his last chance to win a medal and Leander as always "game" for India.

They may end up with a medal.

my mistake.

That is their personal problem.
But see if that was because of money
then they would have been playing all
tournament jointly. but they split up
when they were number 1.
