Majority of India seems doesn't appreciate its unique diversity
by Anand Raghavan on Dec 31, 2007 11:01 AM  | Hide replies

Don't know why people digress to unrelated discussion when the topic is about excitement during Chennai open that starts as one of the first ATP tourneys of the year(Chennai, more than any other city in India has long had and still has a tennis culture). Is this a psychological problem or jaundiced view of something they've felt it to be different from what they're used to. When the main purpose of any language is of communication, isn't it naive to expect, as if it's a birth right, Hindi to be spoken by the people in a state whose mother tongue is Tamil. All the more when people here are comfortable with English. Do we expect Japanese to speak English when we go to Japan ? Don't we learn Japanese and get prepared ? The same applies for non-hindi speaking people, not to expect people to speak in non-hindi language. When there's a need, people learn that language, not necessary otherwise.
Whether one likes it or not India is a land of diversities and one doesn't understand India if he cannot appreciate that very fact, which is one of its unique and inherent strengths.

wow, its sad to see people still talking out of utter ignorance and flawed perspectives about Chennai. The city continues to live these tags.

Mr. Akhil - Tamil culture has been an integral part of this land for almost 5000 years. The so called Hindi/hindustani culture originated after the settlement of Aryan and other tribes who came into the coutry through the Hindu-Kush 2000 - 2500 years back. The harshas, mauryas, kushanas etc came during this period which was followed by the Muslims, Mughals etc. If such being the case, what makes you all think Now tell me, what makes Karunanidhi - a tamilian and Chennai - a part of Tamil Nadu not fit to be part of India?
Non-Hindi speaking is not unlawful. India is a democracy - I think many here should understand what it really means.

Not only Akhil, there are so many people think that INDIA is only for Hindi speaking people.
There are more than 18 languages and cultures in India. Thats Y we call India as a country with Unity in Diversity.
Dont spoil them.
