Excellent work by Federer. And there are many such sporting heroes we admire. While we enjoy this, one wonders when India will produce any such? But the good news is that, there are many sprouting in different fields. Be it Sania or Anup Sridhar in badminton, or Saina etc.
RE:When will India produce class sportsmen?

India will produce class sportsmen only when an organized system is in place like in developed countries. For example, USA produces great players because high schools and colleges have a system where talented students are treated as national property and given all kinds of incentives, the main one being scholarships. The schools then have full time coaches to fine tune their ward%u2019s skills and and to make sure their school or college is well represented . The professional teams in turn have scouts going across the country to nab them. Because the competition is so intense there is no room for discrimination or regionalism. Once India adopts this system they will be no looking back. Prakash Padukone, Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Amritraj are all self made athletes and came up purely on their God given talent and with some guidance from their parents or local coaches. In a way, these sportsmen have made it big against all odds and should be saluted

We will produce fine performances only when our sports administrators think more about the sport and the country than themselves.
The western countries rely on private sponsorship for funding the training programs of top class athletes. In turn the sponsors ask questions when the athlete performs below par.
In India, the top athletes feel that when they get a Government job it is time for them to enjoy the fruits of their endeavour.
And what support are performers like V. Anand and PT Usha getting from the media or the bureaucrats. When Sania gets a pimple on her right cheek, it is news.
Congrats to Federer. What a natural player. Even though I know he will win most of his matches, I watch him, because of the effortless style in which he demolishes his opponent. A true successor to an artist like MacEnroe.

It is funny but true about your comment on Sania. Regarding Federer, it is indeed a treat to watch him play. His emotional demeanor speaks volumes about his mental strength. I think it was MacEnroe or Agassi who said that Federer never plays to his maximum potential but just plays a notch better than the opponent.
comeon rediff get your facts clear 14 grand slam titles are not held by Andre agassi but pete sampras it is such a great shame for you to have made such a mistake

Mandar, What's so shameful in it? The article never talks about grand slam titles in the first place! I feel you need to go back to school to understand the language, and also to a good finishing school to get a feel of effective communication skills (I am just falling short of suggesting you visit a psychiatrist too!!!)

yeah.. that is because as the year progresses he loses the points he gained last year.. so if he won a tournament last year in June and gained 500 pts.. he loses them this year ...and if he wins another tournament having 500 pts.. he gains 500 and the net effect can remain the same

one does not get points for defending the titles won durig the previous years, and as Reddy puts, u lose them for not defending. Last year RF did not win Cincinati. So it should increase now

He lost in 2nd round last year and got 35 points for it. This year he won it, so he will get 500 and the difference of 465 will be added. He is still clearly ahead of everybody else.
