India slam six against Cambodia in the Nehru Cup !
by cajetan coelho on Aug 18, 2007 01:34 PM

Our football team is moving in the right direction. The team is getting some international exposure too. The NFL and Fed Cup events are gaining visibility. Local football leagues in Kolkata, Manipur, Punjab, Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Kerala, Delhi and Chennai are becoming competetive. There is good bit of player movement across the country. Grassroot level activities too are on the rise in Kerala, Bengal, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and in other parts of the country. It looks like we are in for good times. Cheers.

OFcourse ranking does matter. But an international win is always a confidence booster. IF our great Indian cricket team needs to frequently hone their skills with morale lifting victories against Scotland and bangladesh, lets do the same with football. At least for the start. India is never so bad in football to be ranked as low as 162. SHe is consistent round the 110-115 mark. It is only poor support and lack of exposure that has plunged the team so deep. Infact, the state of football is so hurting that even silly teams like Kyrgystan are daring to send their 2nd string teams in the Neheru Cup.

Is this cambodian team their original national senior team or a select team ?

If it is their original national senior team then only we can really cheer about the victory.

Too much hype abt cricket. encourage Indian football to be a world power. Bengal especially should take the lead. Open sports complexes in district towns and groom youngsters with properly trained coaches. Get at least 500 coaches trained abroad and start a football movement. Football is the greatest game on earth and a power symbol. Football has mass appeal and physically demanding and rewarding.

Why dont the communists take initiate in football facilities in Bengal & Kerala, where Football is larger than Cric. Let these states start and march ahead and put an example for other states to follow

Communists spell doom everywhere, be it the nations progress or sports! The communist led Bengal and Kerala have been playing football for all these donkey's years, but have they managed to build a decent team even at the Asian level, forget the world?

May be right, but we cannot blame the communists for everything. The central sports ministry has decided to put the final nail in the indian team's coffin by degrading investments in football of late. The reason cited was, the team's poor performance. This, I think is stupid. There is no proper infrastructure of the sports in the whole country and he suddenly expects soemthing great to be done by the football team out of the blue! The problem, my friend, is with the sports ministry at all levels (centre or state). We need to have the right persons in those places. We need to have sports ministers who are motivated "more" by sports than by politics.

people from the north-eastern states have inherent athletic skills and a good amout of stamina inherent in them. what they do lack is proper facility and coaching. i feel taking football seriously to these guys would really revamp indian soccer.
