We dont want sporting events but we need................
by Jurist Jurist on Apr 18, 2007 10:57 AM  | Hide replies

We dont want sporting events but we need good schools, hospitals and roads etc. These corrupt politicians who are heading the sporting bodies wants to make some dirty money in the name of sports too. I agree with MR MS Aiyar. ASIAD is not going to change the life of common man. But the development of basic infrastructure will change the same. We are global competitors in technical knowhow and we should concentrate in How to develop the same further. Sports is an irrelevant field for INDIA.

Buddy, you dont make sense. Dont mix poverty & sports. Mr Aiyar, doesnt fit into any ministry...least Sports ministry...may be the reason I can think of is, Suresh Kalmadi mentioned we will re-use the infrastructure developed for commanwealth games... so no new projects...so no money

Why are we not like the westerners?
by Shyam Shivadas on Apr 17, 2007 11:30 PM

Why should we imitate the westerners?
Why cant we be Indians?

The americans have a history that is only 2 to 3hundred years. Wherever they have set their foot they have destroyed that country's fauna, its mineral wealth and whatever culture it had. Why should we imitate a people with that kind of background?

By hosting international sports events, we hope to improve the standard of our sportspersons. It is an unfortunate aspect of todays sports that it has become very expensive in terms of infrastructure.

Why should we improve the standard of our sportspersons? It is because a gold medal winner increases the pride of the citizen in his counatry. He becomes proud to be a citizen of that country.

Look at the effect of Nadia Comanachi on Romania. Look at the effect of Schumi and Becker on Germany. Look at the effect of Federer on Switzerland. Look at the effect of PTUsha, Tendulkar, Paes, Bhupathi, Amritraj brothers and Vishwanath on India.

Compared to westerners we are naive, because we trust people. We welcome guests. That is why so many foreigners have had so much success in conquering our country. This country has welcomed each and every religion of the world. We have not said that there is only one God. There is space for any number of Gods. The more the merrier.

If all this indicates the naivety of Indians, than that is what we are.

Why should we be like the westerners?

Sports Minister blamed for failed bid?
by Ashutosh Kole on Apr 17, 2007 10:37 PM  | Hide replies

Its true that hosting any sporting event does not boost the infrastructure on a larger scale nor does it help the poor. There is hardly any relation between them. Also, I do not think that the OCA's decision on accepting Korea's bid has anything to do with Mani Shankar's statement. They work in a very objective way and weigh all the options from all the sides and then come to a decision. So it is foolish to blame Mani for that. One fact to be taken into account though, Koreans are good at marketing, heck, they are good at imitating. For centuries they have imitated Japan, China etc. Now they are well versed with US style marketing. They are also good at team work. External appearance is very important for them, internal content is secondary. Moreover, they will not think a bit if they have to step over someone's throat to go ahead. Actually, we Indians are naive and totally not good in presenting ourselves well. We constantly in fight and show others that we do that. Thats one of our biggest problems. We should be good in presentation. Please read the following link if anyone is interested.

Hi Ashutosh,
I read your comment and read the article refered by you.
Who says that sports or any events doesnt boost infrastructure of the city organising it?
Korean newspapers has already estimated the revenue from 2014 Asian games.. For your referenece I am translating those facts in English.

Income from Organising AG-2014: Two hundred billion Won
Increase in Production : 13 Trillion Won
Increase in Value Added Services :5.6 Trillion Won
Employment Generation : 270 Thousand Working day.
(1$= almost1000 won)
If you can read Korean pls go through the link below.

Are you still not convinced?
Other related facts..
1. Korea was poorer than Indian till early 70s.
2. Seoul Olympic boosted Korean Economy and Korea on world map.
3. Seoul has better infrastucture and transport services only due to 1988 Olympic.
4. Athens has got better infrastucture. Is politics is the reason there?

I feel that Kalmadi's remark on corrupt Aiyar is right. Both are from same party. Why should Kalmadi blame Aiyar without any solid reason?

If the Sports Minister is against hosting Asian Games, then what is he doing? Only when we host more international events India can improve in sports & games. Poverty is prevelant in all the countries, classic example China...not everyone in China are rich and still they hosted Olympics & Asian games. If still the minister thinks the other way, let him quit and do something good for the poors & sports aspirants of India atleast
