Blindfold chess in early India (500 BC)
by on Apr 22, 2007 08:22 PM  | Hide replies

Some thinks blindfold chess or mind chess is a recent invention.

But this type of game was played in early India as far as 500 BC.
See "Digha Nikaya, Maurice Walsh translation page 70. (Brahmajala
sutta)

Buddha admonishes monks : "Where as some ascetics addicted to such idle
persuits such as eight row or ten row chess, chess in the air (mental
chess), hopscotch, spillikins, dicing, ball games, guessing letters,
hand pictures, guessing thoughts, mimicking deformities, playing with
toy ploughs the ascetic Gotama refrains from such idle persuits." Digha
Nikaya, Maurice Walsh, page 70.

Many think Blindfold chess is a new idea.

But this type of game was played in early India as far as 500 BC.

See "Digha Nikaya, Maurice Walsh translation page 70. (Brahmajala

Buddha mildly admonishes monks : "Where as some ascetics addicted to such idle
persuits such as eight row or ten row chess, chess in the air (mental
chess), hopscotch, spillikins, dicing, ball games, guessing letters,

Long Live Vishy

Anand's journey to the top of the world ranking's is a matter of great redemption for very many Indians - especially those who were disappointed by India's dismal low-class performance at the cricket world cup.

Anand was always India's pride. Indians as we are take pride in statistics and so we had momentarily forgotten all other achievers, fortunately for us our cricketers did not do well. Still Anand is too good a player to lose to Topolov repeatedly during their encounters last year. Now that he has taken over, instead of trying to defend his No.1 position he should play more aggressively though not in kasparov's style, but with that kind of attitude.

Substance of pride

I this is the best news I have ever listen in the recent time. We should put our hands togather for Vishy, its really foolish to sit in front on TV all the day seeing these loser(cricketers). This is the time that we must cheer other sports.....
