Leander the Great!!!
by prashanth on Sep 18, 2006 04:33 AM

I still remember the Davis Cup Quarterfinal tie against France in Frejus, France. The hosts left no stone unturned to defeat us by inviting us to play on Red Clay - the least favored by Indians. But Lee, still a young kid, surprised not only the French teams but all the millions of Indians watching the tie with his razor sharp bullet like returns. His chip and charge game worked to amazing effect. I still remember the breath taking shots he played to defeat players Henry Leconte and Arnord Boetsch who much above him in the ATP ranking. It was so inspirational for a young kid like me back then. Since the victory was on a foreign soil in alien conditions made it even more sweet.

I admire Leander for his strong commitment and tenacity of purpose, which can be seen in every activity of his. One can not measure it by the yard stick of winning trophies only. I wish we had more Leanders amongst us to inspire not just the youngsters but every Indian. He is a role model for all in his own humble way. May God bless him with greater achievements and make all of us proud of him.
