Bollywood and India

Im sure all of u all who dont think bollywood portrays our country love Hindi movies! Why doesnt it not portray India? I think it does. Most stories are picked out of real life events or based on family oriented lifestyle in India. If a director does trek another direction he gets buzzed down and the film rarely does well. Bollywood maynot potray India in a literal fashion but it is a representation of Indian culture filled with colour, love, passion and emotions.

you had to be in melbourne to know how much hype there was on closing ceremony .. and indian stars shone brightly .. even brighter than australian events in the event capital of the world .. so bollywood definitely served india well that day .. now world will follow to india for 2010 games ..

no it doesn't... but do we show at an international stage?
by Shripad on Mar 30, 2006 10:57 AM

i been living in australia for last 7 years. here in the media or general public if we hear anything good about india its cricket or bollywood. when its cricket its sachin, laxman, etc. when it is bollywood its dance, its called bollywood dance. especially in recent (say last 3) years bollywood is seen as one thing that comes out of india and people around the world watch it, and it has global influence. people from western background (or white/european) who doesn't know anything about hindi/india have found bollywood dance very attactive for various reason such as fitness, different style of dance, beautiful dance from different culture, etc.

so, i think it was perfect marketing to use bollywood dance.

Does Bollywood portray India?
by T Daniel on Mar 29, 2006 06:26 AM

The question here is not whether Bollywood portrays India or not. The Indian CW Games committee had a job to do, i.e get some butts in the seats in Dilli 2010. And they did a good job by stirring some interest in what India has to offer in a language the world could understand. For once India has portrayed itself in a positive way. Moreover the Indian CW games committee showed snippets of what India can offer in the limited time they had. When we showcase India to the world we have to understand the culture and interest of the people it is targeted to. There is great demand for Indian cuisine and dress and culture all over the world now. Indian dance and drama and Ayurveda is now being accepted worldwide. Try to take advantage of this situation in a mutually beneficial way, instead of bad mouthing people who do somethings with some sophistication. One should not hope to attract the world to Dilli by showing chakras and bullock carts, bio-gas and other legacies. Suggest a few cultural items that could have been shown in Melbourne to get the world interested in India. Be constructive.

no its wrong

Its a real shameful thing that all our heroes are ignored by us like they dont exist. i must say we should learn something from Australians. The way they supported their players and winners at Commonwealth Games was simply gr8.Its a games event, its alrite if bollywood ppl r representing India but our players must be given their due respect. We must tell the world that its not only a cricket n movie nation, its much beyond that as well n we know how to respect our sportsmen for their sweat n hard work.

Relax Guys

Relax guys its just a marketing tool to use the Bollywood actors in question.
No sporting hero is being undermined here.
A good number of native population now watches our movies in the cineplexes throughout the world today and the stars were used only to connect with people at an emotional level hence creating a bond and converting it with them visiting India and hence........you know how the wheel goes.
So relax, sit back and worry nothing.
Learn to take things easy guys.

Saurabh.

Film people in Sports- Not a good option
by Leena on Mar 28, 2006 05:41 PM

Was left wondering what Rani Muhherjee, Saif and those host of Indian movie stars were doing in the Commonwealth games? It was sad to note that all the Stalwarts of Indian Sports were sidelined by the glamour world. The programs presented didnt do any justice to the culture of India. Hope we get some genuine folk and cultural artistes for the 2010 commonwealth. Nothing can beat the original and surely the Mumbai Film world is not the right representation of true India, especially in the Sports Arena.
What we wish to see are not these fake and unnatural shows about Indian culture. Hope we dont get to see such awful programs again. Hope the Delhi Commonwealth keeps its distance from the Film world.

Killing of Sports

Either Cricket or Bollywood for any sportsperson to attract in India, but that is not the case outside India. There was some exemplary performance from Bollywood stars, but truly underestimated the real stars or sportspersons of our nation. IOA has think over on promoting talent and felicitating stars. I felt bad that Samaresh Jung was not there to recieve David Dixon award it is something like recieving Golden Boot after completion of Football world cup.

Three Cheers Samaresh Jung, Sharath, Rani, Kunjurani Devi and all winners from India.
