I wonder how Anand defeats top players like Topalov with ease whereas he finds it difficult against the Grandmasters not in top 50, like Bruzon. And against GMs with ratings of just over 2500, like Pascal Charbonneau, he even manages to lose. May be it is because of his familiarity with the style of top players and unfamiliarity with games and style of the lesser GMs. And if that is true, then Lasker's dictum, "Play the man, not the board.." or something like that, is indeed true.
